            "abstractNote": "A study comparing two scarification intensities (single and double passes) was established 3 years after harvesting a black spruce-mosses stand using the group seed-tree method. The effects on black spruce (Picea mariana) (Mill.) B.S.P.) advance growth, natural seedling establishment and competing vegetation were examined in relation to seedbed changes over a 5-year period. Scarification was effective in controlling ericaceous shrubs and it greatly changed seedbed types. It removed 50–70% of the feather moss coverage, the effect being related to intensity of treatment. The F horizon was the dominant seedbed produced by scarification which also exposed underlying layers more favorable for seed germination. After 5 years, the two scarification intensities improved black spruce stocking from natural seeding (40–47%) compared with elearcut only (32%). Stocking decreased linearly with distance from seed-tree groups which appeared to be efficient up to 50 m only. Scarification greatly increased paper birch (Betula papyrifera (March.)) regeneration proportionally to intensity; the number of seedlings was doubled by the single pass (6333 ha−1) and more than tripled by the double pass (11 625 ha−1) compared with the control (3417 ha−1). The treatment also removed between 50 and 60% of the black spruce advance growth of layer origin, which resulted in a 20% decrease in stocking (absolute value). However, when layers and seedlings of black spruce were taken together the stocking reached 60% in both scarification intensities. In terms of total number of stems, scarification caused a 40% decrease in density coupled with a strong reduction of the layer:seedling ratio (2.7 to 1.6). The general trend shows a significant increase in the growth of layers 6 years after logging. Growth patterns of individual stems suggest that layers with a good growing potential started their height growth increase 3–4 years after logging.",

P. maximus occurs on bottoms of clean firm sand, fine gravel or sandy gravel, sometimes with an admixture of mud; A. opercularis is frequently found on the same grounds, but it can also live on harder gravel and shelly bottoms. After disturbance, scallops attempt to recess by repeated ejection of water jets directed at the sediment. Swimming movements are used to move short distances if the sediment is unsuitable for recessing. The speed of recessing and swimming ability is greatly reduced after the stress of dredge capture, so undersized discards may be less able to escape from predators. Growth in P. maximus is strongly seasonal and most populations are easily aged by counting the rings laid down on the shell when growth resumes in spring. Mimachlamys varia (L.) is a small scallop, rarely growing to a shell height exceeding 60 mm. The shell is inequivalve, with both valves convex. The reproductive biology of M. varia differs considerably from P. maximus and A. opercularis because M. varia is a successive protrandric hermaphrodite.",

            "abstractNote": "The low cost of direct tree seeding makes it increasingly useful for afforestation. However, the success of the technique is often unpredictable due to a series of different adverse biotic and abiotic factors. A plant cover with low competitive ability towards resources could offer a natural alternative to the herbicides currently used to control weeds. The effects of cover plants on availability of resources and microclimate were studied in a field experiment in the central France during three years. An experiment design crossing three mixtures of tree seeds with four vegetation compositions (a bare soil, flora of the meadow, and two mixtures of cover plants) was established and repeated randomly in three blocks in a meadow. Vegetation composition, tree seedling emergence, light availability, soil water content, and temperatures under each treatment were measured. The vegetation composition of the meadow stayed stable, with grass species dominating. The cover plants sown disappeared rapidly after one or two years. Outcome of direct seeding of trees depended on the vegetation treatment. Bare soil gave the highest emergence rate while meadow vegetation gave the lowest, with the mixture of cover plants being intermediate. Light availability and soil water content were very low under the meadow vegetation but were very high on the bare soil, again with cover plant mixtures being intermediate. This study confirms that a bare soil obtained by herbicide is a secure way to ensure tree seedling establishment in afforestation by direct seeding. However, with the onus currently on reducing herbicide use, the results suggest that sowing a mixture of cover plants could be an acceptable alternative to herbicides. The cover plants could offer protection against frost, scorching temperatures, or the water run-off encountered on bare soil. However, there are also a number of unresolved issues that need be addressed before the cover plants technique can be recommended.",

            "abstractNote": "Compared with conventional planting, direct seeding of Quercus spp. is a method that can reduce the costs of reforestation considerably. However, interference from natural vegetation and predation on acorns contribute to regeneration failures. Mechanical site preparation has the potential to reduce both these problems. To study the influence of sowing date and of different mechanical site preparation treatments on early seedling growth, an experiment was carried out in storm-felled areas, formerly Norway spruce forests, in southern Sweden from May 2006 to September 2008. Five treatments were applied and acorns were planted in May and July 2006. The treatments were: disc trenching, patch scarification, topsoil removal, mounding and an undisturbed control. A delay of less than two months in seeding resulted in the equivalent of one year's growth reduction with respect to oak seedling's height and biomass. This could be explained by delayed emergence of seedlings, and by the dry conditions during summer seeding. The seedlings only exhibited a weak positive biomass growth response following disc trenching, patch scarification and top soil removal. In the latter case this might be explained by increased soil compaction and extensive removal of the humus layer. Site preparation by mounding resulted in good vegetation control, an increased biomass growth response and deeper seedling roots. In this treatment, we found high relative light levels near seedlings, reduced soil moisture and dry bulk density of the soil and higher soil temperatures. One or more of these environmental factors could have influenced the growth response. Whether this increased early growth rate persists throughout young stand development is, however, uncertain.",

            "abstractNote": "This paper reviews aspects of crop physiology and productivity for selected grain legumes. Vegetative development, including phases of leaf area increase and branching are described, then, the main reproductive stages and their progression along the stem are discussed. The effects of water and nitrogen shortage on reproductive development are briefly described. A model for reproductive development along a stem is proposed and applied to several grain legumes, and effects of genetic variability are discussed. Growth, and its analysis in terms of intercepted radiation and radiation use efficiency are then reviewed. The variability of these two components is analysed according to differences due to species, genotypes (mainly characterized by different foliage structures), environmental conditions and methods of measurement. Yield is then analysed as a direct consequence of crop growth. Finally, a pattern of assimilate partitioning is described, and its consequences for reproductive structure formation, i.e. the grain number on each node of the stem, are discussed.",

            "abstractNote": "Soil organic matter (SOM) plays a central role in the functioning of ecosystems, and is beneficial from agronomic and from environmental point of view. Alternative cultural systems, like direct seeding mulch-based cropping (DMC) systems, enhance carbon (C) sequestration in agricultural soils and lead to an increase in soil macrofauna. This study aimed at evaluating in field mesocosms the effects of earthworms on SOM dynamics and aggregation, as influenced by residue quality and management. In the highlands of Madagascar, buckets were filled with 2 mm-sieved clayey Inceptisol. The effects of earthworm addition (Pontoscolex corethrurus), residue addition (rice, soybean, and no addition), and localization of the residues (mulched or buried) were studied. After 5 months, soil from mesocosms with earthworms had significantly lower C concentration and higher proportion of large water-stable macroaggregates (&gt;2000 μm) than those without earthworms, because of the production of large macroaggregates by earthworms. Earthworm effect on soil aggregation was greater with rice than with soybean residues. Casts (extracted from mesocosms with earthworms) were slightly enriched in C and showed significantly higher mineralization than the non-ingested soil (NIS), showing that at the time scale of our study, the carbon contained in the casts was not protected against mineralization. No difference in microbial biomass was found between casts and NIS. Complementary investigations are necessary to assess long-term effects of earthworm addition on SOM dynamics, the conditions of occurrence of physical protection, and the impact of earthworms on the structure of the microbial community.",

            "abstractNote": "Direct seeding of deciduous trees below the canopy of conifer stands has proven to be a very economical method for converting pure stands into mixed stands. However, many direct seedings of beech seeds provided unsatisfactory results without a clear explanation for this lack of success. In order to identify the main factors determining seed germination under the canopy of pure Norway spruce stands, three different treatments of direct seeding were tested. These treatments were: (i) direct seeding without additional measure (control), (ii) direct seeding and liming, and (iii) direct seeding covered with beech leaf litter. The experiment consists of two stands. Direct seeding was carried out on six plots per treatment and stand. Each plot includes 81 sample units of 0.5 m2 upon each of which 15 g of seeds were sown. The germinative capacity of the seeds was pre-determined (68%). Germination of the seeds was recorded repeatedly from May to September 1997. On the related sample units canopy density was measured and fine root biomass of the overstorey trees was estimated. There was a significant difference in seedling number between the two stands. The number of seedlings did not increase by liming (coincident with seeding). In contrast, the covering of seeds with leaf litter caused a remarkable and significant increase in the number of germinated seeds. As ANCOVA showed, models including canopy density or estimated fine root biomass of the overstorey trees explained 72 and 52% of the variation in mean seedling number per plot. As canopy density as well as estimated fine root biomass determine the water content of the soil, it can be assumed that the germination of beech seeds originating from direct seedings under the canopy of pure spruce stands depends to a great extent on soil moisture at the time when the direct seeding is carried out, as well as the weeks following seeding. For this reason, direct seedings in very dense stands are not recommended against the background of this study.",

            "abstractNote": "The most commonly used measurement of radiation damage to seeds is seedling height, the mean height a lot of seeds attains at some time during exponential growth. If planted immediately post-irradiation, seeds of a dose lot give a normal height distribution, but if stored before planting give very abnormal and even bimodal height distributions. By within-seed comparisons of chromosome abnormality (from roots excised at 24–36 hr) with height (attained by 7–9 days) in irradiated barley seeds, it is shown that damage to height and to chromosomes are closely correlated, even within a treatment in which great heterogeneity occurs. The two effects have equal radiosensitivity, but different shoulders to their dose curves. Seedling height is not depressed until 25–30 per cent of the cells bear chromosomal abnormalities. The heterogeneity observed is not due to a between-seed heterogeneity in dose or in oxygen content, and probably not in moisture. These experiments show that the heterogeneity arises from factors that operate on post-irradiation (indirect) storage damage, but are without effect on during-irradiation damage (direct).",

However, the environmental conditions in these habitats are unfavorable for germination. Seeds of other species may be nondormant at maturity.             "abstractNote": "The product and the farm costs in arable farming systems are dependent on the interannual climatic variability. In the present context of agricultural price stagnation, the increase of worker productivity is one of the first priorities in this kind of system. Previous studies revealed that in the arable farming systems studied, equipment and manpower levels are settled by the amount of autumn work. So the authors try to give prominence to available margins retarding climatic risks during this peak period. The method presented is based on a simulation of the running of autumn work. The simulator employs structural data such as a cropping plan, equipment and manpower combination, and a general organization model which includes decision rules. In fact, it appears as a work calendar which gives, under the same climatic conditions, the same cultivation operations and the same work dates as the farmer's ones. The computerized setting has been achieved on a compatible microcomputer and written in C language. After validation from work dates truly observed on the farm, the simulation operated over fifteen different climatic years and so allows the analysis of the system in non-observable situations. An illustration of the model's possibilities is given from an example.",

The results showed the advantage, in grain yield, of wheat that crop precedent is fallow relatively to wheat following wheat. Tool effect of tillage soil is related to crop precedent. Indeed, Waha cultivated under fallow tilled with scarifier produced more grain than after wheat. However, proper management of production system improved productivity efficiency in rainfed agriculture. It is focused on soil and water resources conservation.",

            "abstractNote": "In this paper, it is argued that adequately assessing the implications of the current patterns of woodfuel production and use, and the sustainable potentials of woodfuel resources, requires a holistic view and a better knowledge of the spatial patterns of woodfuel supply and demand. There is a need to conduct multi-scale spatially explicit analyses of woodfuel supply and demand that are able to articulate local heterogeneity at the regional and national levels. Studies that provide full-country coverage and are based on consistent integration of data at lower geographical scales are woefully lacking. This paper describes the Woodfuel Integrated Supply/Demand Overview Mapping model (WISDOM). This is a GIS-based tool, aimed at analyzing woodfuel demand and supply spatial patterns from a new perspective that includes: (a) the assembling of existing but dispersed information into single data sets, (b) a modular integration of these data sets, based on the analysis of key variables associated with woodfuel demand and supply patterns, and (c) a multiple-scale and spatially explicit representation of the results, in order to rank or highlight areas in which several criteria of interest coincide. The final objective of WISDOM is to assess the sustainability of woodfuel as a renewable and widespread energy source, while supporting strategic planning and policy formulation. Three case studies for Mexico, Slovenia, and Senegal illustrate the practical implementation and innovative results of using WISDOM.",

            "abstractNote": "This study evaluated the impact of direct seeding mulch-based cropping (DMC), as an alternative to conventional tilling (CT), on a functional community involved in N cycling and emission of greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O). The study was carried out for annual soybean/rice crop rotation in the Highlands of Madagascar. The differences between the two soil management strategies (direct seeding with mulched crop residues versus tillage without incorporation of crop residues) were studied along a fertilization gradient (no fertilizer, organic fertilizer, organic plus mineral fertilizers). The activity and size of the denitrifier community were determined by denitrification enzyme activity assays and by real-time PCR quantification of the denitrification genes. Denitrification activity and total C and N content in the soil were significantly increased by DMC both years, whereas the fertilization regime and sampling year (crop and mulch types, climatic conditions) had very little effect. Similar results were also observed for denitrification gene densities. Denitrification enzyme activity was more closely correlated with C content than with N content in the soil and denitrification gene densities. Principal component analysis confirmed that soil management had the strongest impact on the soil denitrifier community and total C and N content for both years and further indicated that changes in microbial and chemical soil parameters induced by the use of fertilizer were favored in DMC plots. Overall, the alternative DMC system had a significant positive effect on denitrifier densities and potential activities, which was not altered by crop rotation and the level of fertilization. These data also suggest that in these clayey soils, the DMC system simultaneously increased the size of the soil N pool and accelerated the N cycle, by stimulating the denitrifier community. Complementary investigations should further determine in greater detail the influence of DMC on in situ N-fluxes caused by denitrification.",

            "abstractNote": "In the current global context, fossil energy consumption is a concerning feature of crop production systems. Increasing knowledge about energy use in agriculture is crucial towards reduction of the unsustainable use of limited and costly energy resources and the related greenhouse gas emissions. As part of an effort to evaluate the adaptation of direct seeding into mulch (DSM) in the SE of France, the present study assessed the impacts of DSM on the energy balance as compared with conventional tillage (CT) system. The crop rotation included corn, sorghum, and durum wheat. In this study farm gate approach was employed to compute energy balance. Results showed that DSM required significantly lower energy input for all three crops, while for corn and sorghum the differences in energy output, energy gain, output/input ratio and energy intensity were not significantly different. It means that DSM for corn and sorghum could significantly reduce energy input (up to 18%) while maintaining output. Furthermore DSM decreased 42–50% the consumption of diesel and lubricants compared with CT. These results suggest that, in the term of energy balance, DSM is an interesting alternative to CT system in the SE of France.",

            "abstractNote": "The concept and some definitions of sustainable agriculture are reviewed. Most of these definitions include economic, environmental and sociological aspects. The finite area of land emphasizes the need for consideration of soil conservation and of soil quality in relation to sustainability. An important element of soil quality is rooting depth. Therefore loss of soil by erosion is a dominant factor in long-term sustainability. The effects of tillage on soil parameters in minimum data sets that have been proposed to describe soil quality are reviewed. Soil organic matter may be one of the most important soil quality characteristics in relation to tillage because of its influence on other soil physical, chemical and biological properties. Conservation tillage practices can increase the organic matter content, aggregate stability and cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the topsoil. However, bulk density and penetrometer resistance are also increased, especially with zero tillage. Although such soil quality parameters may form a basis for describing some of the consequences of particular tillage practices, they do not provide a basis for predicting the outcome in terms of crop growth and yield. This is both because critical values of soil quality parameters have not been defined and because in some soils biopore formation in zero or minimally tilled land can modify the soil for water movement and for root growth and function. The effects of tillage on crop growth and yield in long-term experiments are reviewed. The review only includes experiments in North America, Europe and New Zealand that have lasted 10 years or more to allow for seasonal variation in weather, possible progressive changes in soil conditions and the learning phase often experienced when new tillage methods are used. While there is a good deal of variation in the results of these tillage experiments some patterns have emerged. In long-term experiments, yields of maize in Europe and the US and soybeans in the US have been similar after ploughing and no-tillage, especially on well-drained soils. In Europe, yields of winter cereals have also been similar after traditional and simplified tillage but yields of spring cereals have sometimes been less after direct drilling than ploughing. Trends in tillage practices are reviewed. Conservation tillage in the US is increasing and is used on about 30% of cropland, including no-till on about 10% of cropland. This increase in use of conservation tillage is mainly attributed to the legal requirement for farmers who are in government price support programs to adopt conservation plans which may involve conservation tillage. However, the allowable rates of erosion in these plans are likely to be in excess of rates of erosion for long-term sustainability. Survey information on tillage practices needs to be considered in relation to predictions on suitability of conservation tillage based on experimental results. In the semi-arid prairies of Canada there is a trend toward fewer cultivation operations, but in eastern Canada the mouldboard plough is still the dominant tillage method. In Europe although erosion is less obvious it is believed to be increasing, but minimum tillage is not widely used. This is because of the need to remove at least some straw for successful minimum tillage in sequential winter wheat and barley crops, but there are few economic uses for straw, and burning is illegal in many countries. In the more moist cooler conditions of Europe grass weed proliferation is another constraint, at least with present technology. So far, the overall success of conservation tillage has not been limited by the growing problem of genetic resistance of weeds to herbicides. Societal attitudes to the continued use of herbicides may pose longer-term problems for some conservation tillage practices.",

This paper presents some results with farming systems modeling using the two databases from the BV-lac development project showing the indicators used through the example of a technical change with adoption of conservation agriculture.",
