"abstractNote": "In advanced, digitalized democratic communities the demands for literacy are a prerequisite for engagement and inclusion, at the same time different forms of divides are omnipresent. By providing access and qualified support to all citizens, public libraries play a central function in the building of democratic and inclusive local communities, being increasingly relied upon by governments to deliver access and support for e-services. Based on a case study of community library services in Sweden, Östergötland, this paper aims to study digital inclusion as reflected in daily practices through the perspective of librarians. In this paper we argue that while advancing digitalisation involves opening of new access and engagement opportunities through empowering digital tools and Internet, it also involves different challenges of exclusion for those who cannot use, choose not to use or have other needs",

"abstractNote": "Communing in networked space\n\nWe often imagine a network as a channel for moving information which works much like a ball in a pachinko machine a chunk of immutable stuff rolling from place to place but the network society is not just about moving information: as the information channel broadens, it is increasingly about sharing feelings and experiences, about empathizing on a mass scale. Network aesthetics is not high culture, but the experience and quality of sharing everyday experiences.\nMariko Sakai, a former documentary producer and currently a researcher at the Museum of Science and Innovation, describes a shift in the values of a networked society. The types of exhibits most popular at the museum reveal a telling shift: people want tangible, tactile representations of processes that are usually invisible. In the networked society we want understand the system, see what's happening behind the visible, and we are attracted to opportunities to touch and manipulate abstract information in tangible representations.\nKari-Hans Kommonen describes the shift in our communication experience from one that is based on direct interaction with other people to one that is increasingly mediated through a network of software programs. As hardware we use to access the network becomes reprogrammable and able to emulate multiple devices, he believes that the physical devices governing our access to the world of networked information will become increasingly generic. The aesthetic value of these devices will be based on elegant and powerful software that is designed in collaboration with the end user.",

"abstractNote": "This paper introduces an analytical framework for understanding the collaborative nature and distributed structure of what is often referred to as design space. We propose that the design space should be conceptualized as the space of possibilities for realizing a design, which extends beyond the concept design stage into the design-in-use activities of people. By locating different activities and mapping participants' possibilities in a continuum from consumption to active creation, we develop a framework for understanding and locating design research interventions and a tool for mapping design activities. We argue that: 1) a design space is always actively co-constructed and explored by multiple actors through their social interactions with and through technologies and 2) the participating actors, resources, conditions and supporting strategies frame the design space available. In doing this, we bring forth relationships between an expanded view of the design space, contemporary discussions on the nature of innovation and the imperative to support explicit collaborative and participatory design activities.",

We present an overview of the current approaches and a categorization of the approaches of using video in design and research into four main strands: video ethnography, video recording of experiments, design videography and professional video production. Through case examples of videos done in our research group over the years, we discuss three potential video genres that suit the needs of co-design. After that suggest five considerations on what should be taken into account when using video in co-design. Finally we conclude by considering potential future directions for the use of video in design and research.",

"abstractNote": "In this paper, we explore the use of collaborative exercises and mental map visualizations as tools for understanding social practices and exploring co-design opportunities for product and service development. The research is based on material gathered through a case study of a web-based data storage service in its beta stage. We use these tools to study the interconnections of the designed system to an array of other applications, tools and services, which form what we refer to as people's digital ecosystem. Our experiences suggest that taking practices as the unit of analysis is a relevant strategy to bring forward users' own knowledge of their everyday life, and link it to the professional knowledge of developers and designers; and that visualizations and collaborative exercises are relevant design thinking strategies.",

As specific example we will use a project-study called \"At home today and tomorrow\". In this study it was established that it is possible to ask people what they would want about future things. The research setting and the contextualization of the future scenarios made it possible for the informants to relate to the possibilities presented to them. The general reception of the new technologies was positive, but the informants - who were not 'early adapters' or 'front runners' but 'adapters' (if using typical segmentations) - didn't see themselves as the prime users. The more concretely and situatedly the contextualization had been made, the easier it was for the informants to evaluate and contribute with ideas of their own. We will present some of the conclusions of this experience, and present ideas for the development of the next stage.",

"abstractNote": "Drawing from a case-study on Helsinki Home Care, the authors identify institutional impacts of new service development in the context of public service delivery, posed by the increasingly collaborative nature of service development and delivery. The authors illustrate the change through identification of characteristics embedded in the traditional professional logic, and the new service logic. With this, the paper contributes to the theoretical discussion on service innovation and collaborative service creation, showing that solely the technical, organizational or commercial perspectives are insufficient in understanding the service development process. This paper further widens the discussion about public service innovation using the institutional change framework.\n \n \nThere are many challenges and opportunities in designing, developing and maintaining services for participatory modes of governance, not to mention their co-creation and peer-to-peer aspects. We ask what can be learned from the current research, and what is happening already beyond academia? With the aim to increase the opportunities for dialogue between the Finnish scene and the international context, we have gathered this collection of articles that deal broadly with the relationships between peer-to-peer dynamics, and public services. Most of the cases presented are illustrative of recent developments and discussions in Finnish society, however, also included are broader international perspectives, giving historical reflection and future-oriented speculation on how peer production might affect the structures of our society.",

"abstractNote": "This thesis describes how an interaction design approach is used to encourage museum community involvement in exhibitions. My hypothesis is that by making the community a part of exhibitions it is possible to broaden and update the perspectives and the discussion on what is exhibited, making content more accessible to a range of visitors and providing more opportunities for learning and engagement. The personal and creative way that people relate to exhibited material makes the contribution of the museum community valuable. Interaction designers have the possibility to plan from the beginning the way that the museum community could create content.\n\nIn order to work on these hypotheses, the main topics for my research are how to create design that encourages community participation in the museum and what to expect from such participation. To tackle this issue, I created and participated in projects that attempted to encourage people to comment on an exhibition, whether in online or onsite formats through interactive pieces. Most of the material that this thesis deals with is firsthand, collected during exhibitions in different museums in Helsinki, Finland. The cases are Sound Trace (Äänijälki) in the Ateneum Museum in 2005, Conversational Map (Keskustelukartta) in Kunsthalle in 2006, and The Secret Life of Objects (Esineiden salatut elämät) in the Design Museum in 2008. The three cases are tightly bonded to my research; each case pointed me in new directions and posed questions that affected the design of the next case.\n\nIn parallel to the development of the projects I looked into the Museum Informatics field and Museum studies, participating in forums around these issues. Both Museum studies and Museum informatics have provided me with an understanding of the problematic from the museum point of view, which I link in this thesis with questions relevant to interaction designers.\n\nMy personal work as a design-researcher allowed me to examine the opportunities and constraints faced by interaction designers working as external collaborators at museums. Part of this study delves deeply into how this content becomes valuable to staff and visitors and how it reflects people’s experience of the exhibition.\n\nIn these case studies, I have designed interactive pieces and mechanisms geared towards involving the visitors, the staff and the designers or artists in the museum so that they create content that is later displayed in the museums. Participatory design approaches influenced the design of these pieces and facilitated the recognition of informal museum practices (sharing thoughts, feelings, jokes and questions) as well as more institutional practices (workshops, guided tours, and publications).\n\nWhen examining the data, I adopted the concept of “ecology of participation” which allowed me to map the complexity of the design arena, thus making visible possibilities for intervention to interaction designers. The ecology-of-participation concept binds the interactive piece, the people, and the practices with the places. My hypothesis is that by examining the ecology of participation it is possible to support and make use of existing practices, places and different actors in the museum. This thesis emphasizes that the quality of the contributions depends on the inclusion and connections within the different components of the ecology.\n\nFinally, I offer recommendations on engaging the community in technically mediated exhibitions. These recommendations are intended to support the museum community as well as interaction designers by offering insight into involvement as a part of the whole museum experience. The recommendations for the museum are to listen to and trust the community by promoting community-created content, forming alliances with external partners, such as universities, for long-term collaborations, and taking risks. Designers involved in digital design projects in museums can work towards integrating the groups in the ecology and nurturing content material. By doing so, designers perform different roles, including that of a facilitator or a gardener that is a key actor in the design of an open museum.",

Where do the horizons and orientations of the users influence or limit what they want and expect of their ICTs and how they use them? This book enables a cross-fertilisation of perspectives from different disciplines and aims to provide new insights into the role of users, drawing out both applied and theoretical implications",
