However, so far, there has not been any research on mapping digital library research for serving such purposes.\nThe thesis was aimed to build a knowledge map of the digital library domain for analysing the past of digital library research (1990-2010) and predicting the future of the digital library research. Also, based on the knowledge map, a digital library ontology and a visual knowledge map were created.\nThe study was conducted in three following phases:\nFirstly, in the Phase 1, the core topics and subtopics of digital library research were identified and organized in order to build a knowledge map of the digital library domain. The methodology comprised a four - step research process and two knowledge organization methods (classification and thesaurus building). A knowledge map covering 21 core topics and 1015 subtopics of digital library research was created, providing a systematic overview of digital library research of the last two decades (1990-2010).\nSecondly, in the Phase 2, using the 21 core topics and 1015 subtopics of digital library research from the knowledge map, bibliometric method and regression analysis, R-Square (R²) techniques were used to analyse the past of digital library research (1990-2010) and predict the future of digital library research.\nThirdly, in the Phase 3, based on the digital library knowledge map, the Protégé ontology software was used for creating the main components of the digital library ontology, viz. individuals, properties and classes, etc. for building the basic digital library ontology that can be visually seen as a knowledge map of digital library research.\nThe research added value in the following areas:\nFirstly, the digital library knowledge map can be used as a knowledge platform to guide, evaluate and improve the activities of digital library research (digital library research management), education (digital library curriculum development) and practices (digital library project management and development). "abstractNote": "BackgroundThe importance of ontologies in the biomedical domain is generally recognized. However, their quality is often too poor for large-scale use in critical applications, at least partially due to insufficient training of ontology developers.ObjectiveTo show the efficacy of guideline-based ontology development training on the performance of ontology developers. The hypothesis was that students who received training on top-level ontologies and design patterns perform better than those who only received training in the basic principles of formal ontology engineering.MethodsA curriculum was implemented based on a guideline for ontology design. A randomized controlled trial on the efficacy of this curriculum was performed with 24 students from bioinformatics and related fields. After joint training on the fundamentals of ontology development the students were randomly allocated to two groups. During the intervention, each group received training on different topics in ontology development. In the assessment phase, all students were asked to solve modeling problems on topics taught differentially in the intervention phase. Primary outcome was the similarity of the students’ ontology artefacts compared with gold standard ontologies developed by the authors before the experiment; secondary outcome was the intra-group similarity of group members’ ontologies.ResultsThe experiment showed no significant effect of the guideline-based training on the performance of ontology developers (a) the ontologies developed after specific training were only slightly but not significantly closer to the gold standard ontologies than the ontologies developed without prior specific training; (b) although significant differences for certain ontologies were detected, the intra-group similarity was not consistently influenced in one direction by the differential training.ConclusionMethodologically limited, this study cannot be interpreted as a general failure of a guideline-based approach to ontology development. tension that runs through many of the articles in the issue. This is a tension between adopting a general philosophical ontology and pursuing empirical studies of particular historical and contemporary practices. The general ontology highlights multiplicity and difference and rejects the idea that, for example, an identical disease entity underlies different practical enactments of that disease in different clinical and research circumstances. The empirical approach investigates how particular identities and differences are negotiated and instantiated in specific circumstances. The two approaches are not necessarily incompatible, but the first settles questions of identity and difference through a ‘pre-theoretical decision’, while the second remains open to distinct resolutions of what counts as identity and difference in the practical settings studied. In this postscript, I argue that a commitment to a general philosophical ontology confuses investigations of specific practical ontologies. To avoid such confusion, I recommend ‘ontography’: historical and ethnographic investigations of particular world-making and world-sustaining practices that do not begin by assuming a general picture of the world. Many organizations require improved methods of information retrieval taking into account that the information has become essential and its appropriate use is extremely important in competitive scenarios. Beyond that, we can mention the need for evolution of the search engines, whereas in order to meet increasingly complex requirements becomes necessary to use semantics. To make this evolution feasible each document belonging to a particular corpus needs to have its main concepts and its relationships identified and stored in appropriate structures. Among these structures are inverted indexes and ontologies in order to perform textual searches and to make inferences, respectively. In this sense, this work presents a proposition for the integration of Information Retrieval and Ontology areas. For the evaluation of the proposed work it was developed a prototype in which was applied on a sample base containing articles from Ontology area. Aiming to ensure for the user an integrated view, the prototype search for information on two bases (textual index and ontology) in a coordinated way and thus demonstrating more fully the details that compose the context of the search.
