Recruitment of larval sea lampreys began in June 1990 with no native lampreys present in the study area. We compared growth, mortality, biomass change, and rate of metamorphosis of larval sea lamprey year-classes from 1992 to 1994, when more than one year-class was present. Recolonization was dominated, in both numbers and biomass, by the 1990 year-class, although recuited numbers of the 1991 year-class were greater than those of the 1990 year-class in 1992, and all juveniles metamorphosing in 1993 and 1994 came from the 1990 year-class. There was no significant change in density of the 1990 year-class during the study but annual mortality of the 1991 year-class (interpreted as intraspecific mortality) was 39%. Larval sea lamprey biomass in the stream increased by 28 g/m2 per year. The 1990 year-class represented 90% of the annual increases during 1992–1994, and following year-classes had no significant increase in density or biomass after recruitment. We examined the role of predation and substrate on egg survival in the laboratory and egg predation and dispersion of eggs outside the nest in the field. Substrate type did not influence the numbers of eggs consumed by predators, but the proportion of available eggs consumed was higher for crayfish Orconectes spp. (74%) and creek chub Semotilus atromaculatus (47%) than for white suckers Catostomus commersonii (9%) and logperch Percina caprodes (3%; F = 11.12, df = 3, P < 0.0001). Survival of eggs incubated on silt (69.2%) and sand (50.8%) in the laboratory was significantly higher than survival on gravel (19.1%). Stream sampling indicated that sea lamprey egg density outside of nests on gravel was low (1.9 eggs/m2) compared with egg density in depositional areas (105.7 eggs/m2); eggs sampled outside the nest had near zero viability. In exclosure boxes seeded with sea lamprey eggs and deployed on gravel and silt for 7–10 d, egg retention was significantly greater on spawning gravel (31 ± 3%; mean ± SE) than on silt (6 ± 3%; P ≤ 0.0001); egg retention was affected by the presence of a 0.5-cm-mesh cover. Stream discharge appeared to increase egg loss from nests. We conclude that predation rates on sea lamprey eggs outside the nest are high and that substrate type alone has little impact on egg hatching success. Given the low retention of eggs in nests, egg mortality is probably a primary determinant of year-class strength. The time from fertilization to 50% hatching and from hatching to 50% burrowing were inversely related to incubation temperature. All the embryos incubated at 7° C died at very early stages, while those maintained at 11° C did not attain the burrowing stage. Survival from fertilization to hatching was 61, 89, 91 and 89% at 11, 15, 19 and 23° C, decreasing to 58, 70 and 70% from hatching to burrowing at 15, 19 and 23° C, respectively. Larvae reared during the first 3 months of exogenous feeding in a common environment at constant 21° C, revealed maximum survival for an incubation temperature of 15° C (43% of burrowed larvae) decreasing strongly at 19° C (16%) and 23° C (one suvivor among 240 larvae). Body length at the burrowing stage was maximum for embryos incubated at 19° C, but body mass increased in the interval 15-23° C. Mean incubation temperatures experienced by 117 broods during the embryonic development in the source river were estimated in 15.3 ± 2.30° C and 16.7 ± 1.76° C. The number of annuli provides reliable age estimates when compared with length-frequency distributions analysis. The growth rate of the sea lamprey ammocoetes displays strong seasonal patterns, and reaches its highest value during the first 2 years of larval stage. About 69% of the length increment between hatching and metamorphosis is attained at the end of the second year. There is a longitudinal gradient associated with ammocoete distribution along the river. In all developmental stages studied, muscle rather than liver tissue served as the main site of carbohydrate and fat storage. Blood glucose and muscle lipid exhibited a positive relationship while liver HMSD and muscle ME activity, a negative relationship, with ammocoete weight. These responses were attributed to a proliferation of red fibers and adipocytes in the ammocoete muscle as the time of metamorphosis approched. Muscle lipid stores of ammocoetes in their last year of larval life increased dramatically during the fall and winter preceding metamorphosis. Changes in tissue enzyme activity of ammocoetes in their last year of larval life indicated that the liver was the site of amino acid incorporation into fat while muscle was the site of lipogenesis from glucose. Ages determined from statoliths, a structure analogous to otoliths in teleost fishes, indicated that many sea lampreys collected from the Chippewa River, Michigan, in September 1995 were undergoing metamorphosis at age 2, at least 1 year earlier than previously observed. In all, 141 newly metamorphosed lampreys were examined, and 81% were estimated to be only 2 years old. The length-frequency distribution of newly metamorphosed sea lampreys in the Chippewa River also indicated the possibility of metamorphsis at age 2, but to a lesser extent than indicated by statolith aging. The Chippewa River is a highly productive stream that might require more frequent treatment than previously suspected. The length-frequency curves are considered to indicate an average larval period of about 5 1/2 years. 2. Frequency curves for populations of L. planeri and mixed populations of L. fluviatilis and L. planeri from other rivers have been interpreted in the same way. 3. From measurements on a large collection of ammocoetes of the landlocked sea lamprey, Petromyzon marinus, of the Lake Huron Basin it has been concluded that in this species also, the average duration of the ammocoete period is 5 years. 4. After an initial period of more rapid growth during the first year, the rate of growth of the ammocoete is approximately linear, although there may be some acceleration in the final growth season before metamorphosis. 5. In the river Yeo growth in length is almost entirely confined to the spring and early summer, and there appears to be a close correlation between the rate of growth and the density of the phytoplankton. 6. Estimates of the annual mortality rates for the ammocoete indicate a fairly uniform rate of mortality throughout the larval period. 7. Support for density-dependent growth was not found in these streams. A linear relationship between total length and age was found for all populations. The daily growth of larvae in lampricide-treated streams was similar to that of populations that were never exposed to lampricide. Furthermore, the growth of stocked residual populations did not increase following a lampricide-induced reduction in larval density. Differences in growth and length at metamorphosis among these streams were accounted for by abiotic factors. Larval growth was highest in streams with an annual water temperature around 8°C, moderate discharge (0.5-2.0 m3/s), and high conductivity (>300μS). Length at metamorphosis, on the other hand, was inversely related to conductivity, annual discharge, and annual mean temperature. Both production and release of lamprey-specific bile acids, and sensitivity to them were examined in a wide variety of species. High pressure liquid chromatography and electrospray ionization/mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) found gallbladders from 10 species of European and North American lamprey to contain large quantities of petromyzonol sulfate (PS) together with much smaller quantities of allocholic acid (ACA) and petromyzonol (P). Evaluation of holding waters from three of these species using ESI-MS found all to contain large quantities of PS and lesser quantities of ACA in similar ratios. Electro-olfactogram recording from the olfactory systems of three parasitic lamprey species found all to detect PS and ACA with high sensitivity. Behavioral studies using migratory adult sea lamprey found them to be attracted to the odors of heterospecific larvae as well as conspecific larvae, both of which contained similar amounts of PS and ACA. Finally, adult silver lampreys (Ichthyomyzon unicuspis) were also found to be attracted to the odor of larval sea lamprey. Together, these results demonstrate that PS and ACA are commonly produced and released by larval petromyzontid lampreys and likely used as part of a common evolutionarily conserved pheromone. Compared with teleosts of similar size, ammonia and urea\nexcretion rates (JAmm and JUrea, respectively) in ammocoetes were relatively low, reflecting the low metabolic rate of\nthese burrow-dwelling suspension feeders. Analyses of liver enzymes indicated that ammocoetes had all the enzymes\nnecessary to produce urea via uricolysis, but not those of the ornithine–urea cycle (OUC). Further, exposure to\n2 mmol·L–1 total ammonia for 5 d was accompanied by a 3-fold elevation of JUrea, but did not lead to greater OUC\nactivity. Internal ammonia levels increased markedly, however, exceeding 2000 mmol·L–1 in plasma and 5000 mmol·L–1\nin muscle after the 5-d exposure period. This high resistance to internal ammonia accumulation was related to the very\nhigh glutamine synthetase activities measured in ammocoete brains. The excretion and production of urea by\nammocoetes demonstrates for the first time that agnathans are capable of producing physiologically relevant amounts\nof urea.
