Their passages downstream the HEP by the bypass and as well by the fishpass for upstream migration were monitored with RFID antennae. On average 80.7% of smolts migrated through the HEP bypass and 3.8% of smolts descended through the fishpass. In total, 84.5% (min-max: 75.5–91.9%) of smolts migrated downstream the HEP via safe routes. 50% of them did it in less than 23 minutes since their release and 75% of them did it in less than 2 hours. Fish migration time was similar for afternoon, evening and night releases (median times between 19 and 21min), but was significantly longer when the fishes were released in the morning (median migration time: 3hours 17min). Ces surfaces ne représentent que 24%\net 39% des surfaces productives accessibles dans les conditions historiques. Deux modèles séparés\npour la Loire et la Bretagne donnent ensuite les productivités des habitats de juvéniles de\nsaumons. Le croisement des modèles de productivité et des surfaces d’habitat permet d’obtenir\nune modélisation des productions de smolts à l’échelle de chaque tronçon hydrographique. Les\nproductions de smolts des deux zones sont équivalentes à 100 000 smolts par an, du fait d’une\nproductivité plus faible de la Loire. Un travail similaire est effectué pour simuler les productions\nd’anguilles dans les conditions actuelles et dans les conditions sans ouvrage à l’aide du\nmodèle EDA. Les productions actuelles d’anguilles sont évaluées à 306 700, 314 900 et 124 400\nanguilles argentées pour les côtiers Bretons, la Loire et les côtiers Vendéens respectivement.\nLes calculs de mortalité sont appliqués à 387 des 749 ouvrages de la zone, initialement recensés\ncomme ayant un usage énergie et hydroélectricité. Les mortalités sont d’abord calculées\nau niveau de chaque turbine pour 578 turbines, dont 136 et 155 identifiées comme Kaplan\net Francis respectivement. Ce calcul est basé soit sur les caractéristiques de la turbine (diamètre,\nvitesse de rotation, hauteur de chute...), soit par extrapolation à partir des mortalités\nmoyennes des turbines de même type, soit enfin lorsque l’information est manquante (cas de\n261 turbines) à partir de la moyenne des mortalités des turbines du bassin. Ces turbines sont\npour l’essentiel situées sur le haut du bassin de la Loire, où l’enjeu est moins fort. Pour les ouvrages\néquipés de grilles fines (<2,5cm), les turbines ichtyocompatibles et les turbines qui ne\nsont plus en fonctionnement, on applique une mortalité nulle. Pour les turbines de type Pelton,\nla mortalité appliquée est de 100%.\nChez les smolts, les taux moyens de mortalité dans les turbines s’établissent à 17% dans\nles Kaplan, 20% dans les Francis et une mortalité moyenne de 20% est appliquée aux autres\nturbines (43%) pour lesquelles les mortalités ne peuvent pas être calculées à partir des caractéristiques\ndes turbines.\nChez les anguilles, les calculs prennent en compte la structure en taille des anguilles dévalantes.\nLes mortalités moyennes dans les turbines s’établissent à 45:8%, 88:5% et 70:8% dans\nles turbines Kaplan, Francis et indéterminées respectivement, soit 36% des cas où le recueil\ndes caractéristiques techniques est suffisant pour permettre un calcul à partir des formules de\nmortalité.\nLes mortalités dans les ouvrages sont ensuite établies à partir des débits nominaux des\nturbines et de la part de débit s’échappant au niveau des déversoirs de décharge de l’ouvrage.\nCe modèle prend en compte pour chaque espèce des scénarios de dévalaison pour 5 classes de\ndébits, calculés à partir de 31 stations hydrologiques de référence, et transposés au niveau de\nchaque ouvrage. La part des poissons transitant par les différentes turbines de chaque ouvrage\nest calculée à partir des données de débit d’équipement.\nUn chainage est ensuite réalisé pour calculer la mortalité cumulée dans les ouvrages se situant\nsur le parcours de dévalaison des poissons partant de n’importe quel point du réseau.\nLes moyennes des taux de mortalité par segments hydrographiques sont calculées à 27:1, 1:7\nchez les smolts en Loire et en Bretagne, et à 3:1, 3:3 et 2:2 chez l’anguille en Loire, Bretagne et\nVendée respectivement.\nLe croisement des données de mortalité et de production pour chaque espèce donne les\nniveaux de mortalité pour différents scénarios.\nPour les saumons, les mortalités sont évaluées à N=26 872 (soit 27%) de la production de smolts en Loire, et N=1 636 (soit 2%) en Bretagne.\nPour l’anguille, les mortalités sont évaluées à N=9 831 (soit 3:1%) de la production d’anguilles\nargentées en Loire, N=9 418 (soit 3:3%) en Bretagne et N=2 687 (soit 2:2%) en Vendée.\nUne simulation des effectifs présents si le libre franchissement à la montée des poissons\nmigrateurs était rétablie est également effectuée. Dans ce scénario, les mortalités s’établissent\nà 41:8% (Loire) et 4:0% (Bretagne) chez les smolts et à 10:1% (Loire) et 4:0% (Bretagne) et 2:7%\n(Vendée) chez les anguilles argentées.\nLes résultats obtenus en terme de production et de mortalité sont discutés, en prenant en\ncompte les atouts et faiblesses des modèles utilisés, les possibles biais et d’échantillonnage\net de complétude des données, et les perspectives d’amélioration du modèle. Il apparait notamment\nque le modèle est plus sensible à la position géographique des individus dévalants\nqu’aux mortalités estimées dans les turbines. D.", "lastName": "McCleave" } ], "abstractNote": "Abstract.—I modeled the cumulative impact of hydroelectric projects with and without commercial fishing weirs and water-control dams on the production, survival to the sea, and potential fecundity of migrating female silver-phase American eels Anguilla rostrata in the Kennebec River basin, Maine. This river basin has 22 hydroelectric projects, 73 water-control dams, and 15 commercial fishing weir sites. The modeled area included an 8,324 km2 segment of the drainage area between Merrymeeting Bay and the upper limit of American eel distribution in the basin. One set of inputs (assumed or real values) concerned population structure (i.e., population density and sex ratio changes throughout the basin, female length-class distribution, and drainage area between dams). Another set concerned factors influencing survival and potential fecundity of migrating American eels (i.e., pathway sequences through projects, survival rate per project by length-class, and length–fecundity relationship). Under baseline conditions about 402,400 simulated silver female American eels would be produced annually; reductions in their numbers due to dams and weirs would reduce the realized fecundity (i.e., the number of eggs produced by all females that survived the migration). Without weirs or water-control dams, about 63% of the simulated silverphase American eels survived their freshwater spawning migration run to the sea when the survival rate at each hydroelectric dam was 90%; 40% survived at 80% survival per dam, and 18% survived at 60% survival per dam. Removing the lowermost hydroelectric dam on the Kennebec River increased survival by 6.0–7.6% for the basin. The efficient commercial weirs reduced survival to the sea to 69–76% of what it would have been without weirs, regardless of survival rates at hydroelectric dams. Water-control dams had little impact on production in this basin because most were located in the upper reaches of tributaries. Sensitivity analysis led to the conclusion that small changes in population density and female length distribution had greater effects on survival and realized fecundity than similar changes in turbine survival rate. The latter became more important as turbine survival rate decreased. Water temperature between 9 April and 16 May explained 91, 95, and 89% of the yearly variation in date of 25, 50, and 75% cumulative smolt descent, respectively. The regression models were not very sensitive to variations of which date we started and stopped recording the temperature. The start of the yearly smolt run was not triggered by a specific water temperature or a specific number of degree-days, but was controlled by a combination of temperature increase and temperature level in the river during spring. Le comportement de 192 anguilles a été suivi par télémétrie sur 60 kms de rivière dans des conditions hydrologiques très variables. L’activité migratoire des anguilles est marquée par des phases de mouvements dont les vitesses varient de 0.05 km/h à plus de 10 km/h et des phases d’arrêts plus ou moins prononcés. Seules 34% des anguilles relâchées en amont des 60 kms de Gave ont franchi la totalité des 6 centrales hydroélectriques. L’activité migratoire est étroitement liée à l’hydrologie avec toutefois une plage de mouvement très large (de 26 m3/s à plus de 529 m3/s). La moitié des passages a lieu à des débits inférieurs à 188 m3/s (2.3 fois le module) et 25% ont lieu à moins de 120 m3/s (1.4 fois le module) et 19% pour des débits inférieurs au module. Les franchissements se concentrent en majorité (88%) lors des coups d’eau et plus spécifiquement lors des montées de débit (73%). Un modèle d’activité migratoire saisonnière a été proposé sur la base d’une équirépartition des déplacements entre 5 classes de débits Q75 ; Q90 ; Q95 ; Q97.5 ; Q99. Les déplacements des anguilles sont très majoritairement observés au crépuscule et en début de nuit (86% des passages entre 17h00 et 8h00 et 53% entre 18h00 et minuit). Les voies de franchissement utilisées aux centrales par les anguilles sont variables d’un site à l’autre et dans le temps. Globalement, 66% des franchissements ont été effectués par les évacuateurs de crue, 31% par les turbines, 2% dans les exutoires dédiés normalement au passage des jeunes saumons et 1% par les passes à poissons. La voie de franchissement utilisée par les anguilles varie fortement en fonction du rapport de débit entre débit total de la rivière et celui des évacuateurs, de la configuration de la prise d’eau (e.g., position par rapport aux écoulements) et de l’espacement des barreaux des grilles. Lorsque les rapports de débits sont en faveur de la prise d’eau, les anguilles franchissent l’ouvrage en passant par les turbines. Les passages par les évacuateurs deviennent majoritaires lorsque les débits du cours d’eau sont au moins 1.5 fois supérieurs à ceux turbinés par l’usine. L’inclinaison des seuils favorisera l’entraînement vers les canaux d’amenée. A l’inverse, les grilles à faible espacement inter-barreaux comme à Baigts (3 cm) et Castetarbe (2.5 cm) limiteront la pénétration des poissons vers les turbines. A noter, que dans ces deux cas, 10 à 21% des anguilles traversent encore le plan de grille.
