Cinema has been continuouslyimproving and developing towards something different from what it is knownfor or what it was in the past. Narrative is the strategy with which any materialis organised and presented to an audience. This is an integral part of a filmand as Thomas Elsaesser argues cinema ‘become a predominantly narrativemedium’ with the development of its ‘codes of intelligibility’.The classical narration is the type of narration that we all as spectatorsnormally expect from a film while nonlinear narratives have emerged from theclassical narrative form. Non linear narratives have been in vogue for a longperiod of time and were considered by some as being inferior to classicalnarrative. However, non linear narratives are now present in many mediaforms and the digital formats have played a crucial role in their developmentas Lev Manovich argues; ‘the use of digital compositing to create continuousspaces out of different elements can be seen as an example of the larger anti-montage aesthetics of computer culture’ (Manovich, 2000,p.155).I believe that investigating something which is contemporary can be verymotivating and constructive. This dissertation would offer me a goodknowledge and understanding of a concept that would be crucial for my futurecareer as a filmmaker. For the research I collected ample amount of literaturefrom diverse sources. Based on the literature collected I have analysed threenonlinear narrative films chronologically. Further to the analysis and literaturecollected I have understood many concepts related to non linear narrativesand have arrived at a conclusion as to how non linear narratives haverevolutionized fictional films.",

One significant development is changing events in film out of chronological order. This technique is called nonlinear narrative. This technique has been used in films, television, and even books. The technique has been thought to be used to mimic the human memory. However, recently it has been used to make a movie more exciting. This technique is not used often because it requires patience from the audience. However, Quentin Tarantino is a director that has used this technique has received great praise for it.\nIn a film a nonlinear structure may be achieved through flashbacks or flash forwards. This is how it was portrayed in earlier days. In the modern age, nonlinear structure is often times hard to notice because of the sophistication in film making and storylines. This technique has been used since the silent era of films to present day films. It was used in Intolerance by D.W. Griffith in 1916. Like movies today, Intolerance used a nonlinear storyline by telling four different stories then connecting them at the end. A nonlinear storyline is usually presented by a confusing or over the top beginning. This is to force the audience to connect the dots throughout the film. This is usually done by the audience making cause and effect connections while scenes go back and forth.",

Give the\nplayer too little, and he may feel constrained and\ndisconnected from the character he is controlling. Give him\ntoo much freedom, and the progression of the story may lag\nor stop altogether. The field of interactive drama attempts\nto strike a balance between interaction and authorship. The\nstory experienced in an interactive drama is dependent both\non the plot content authored as well as the player’s choices\nin the story. Which story representation is appropriate for a\nparticular approach to interactive drama and the relationship\nbetween that language and other elements ofthe architecture\nis a key factor in design. This paper introduces our\ninteractive drama architecture, IDA, and addresses the\nrequirements it has for a story representation. How those\nrequirements are met by our representational choices is the\nfocus ofthe rest ofthe paper.",

Faade: an experiment in interactive drama     In Faade, you, the player, using your own name and gender, play the character of a longtime  friend of Grace and Trip, an attractive and materially successful couple in their early  thirties. During an evening gettogether  at their apartment that   quickly turns ugly, you become   entangled in the high-conflict   dissolution of Grace and Trips   marriage. No one is safe as   the accusations fly, sides are   taken and irreversible decisions  are forced to be made.   By the end of this intense oneact  play you will have changed   the course of Grace and Trips   lives motivating you to replay  the drama to find out how   your interaction could make   things turn out differently the   next time.             "abstractNote": "The topic of interactive narrative has been under research for many years. While there has been much research exploring the development of new algorithms that enable and enhance interactive narratives, there has been little research focusing on the question of how players understand and internalize their interactive narrative experiences. This paper addresses this problem through conducting a phenomenological study on participants playing Façade; we specifically chose a phenomenological methodology due to its emphasis on the participants’ lived experience from the participants’ viewpoint. We chose Façade, because it is the only accessible example of an experience that revolves around social relationships, conflict, and drama as its core mechanics. In this paper, we discuss sixteen themes that resulted from the analysis of the data gathered through the study. In addition, we reflect on these themes discussing their relationship to participants’ backgrounds, and project implications on the design of future interactive narratives.",

The concepts of linear and non-linear are discussed, giving the basics behind the concepts.
