U fo C San Francisco's Disability Statistics Center estimates that presently about one fifth (19.7%) of Americans qualify as disabled, and other sources place the number higher. Census 2000 showed that one in 8 or 33 million reported a severe disability. Barbara Altman estimates close to 40%. "Moreover, we all encounter or think we ecnounter disability at some point in our lives because we acquire temproary impairments or have experiences described as 'disabling.'"
My quote for this: Although historical data is paltry, estimates today of Americans who qualify as disabled start at about twenty percent and range as high as forty percent, depending on the source. Definitions of disability are in flux, but with all the war injuries and less advanced medical techniques it is difficult to imagine that figure not being higher in the postwar period. In addition to those estimates, all Americans know someone who is disabled and nearly every person experiences some sort of disability or disabling condition at some point in their lives, at least temporarily.
