In addition, the mismatch between molecular and morphological evolution rates complicates the characterization of evolutionary lineages, generating taxonomic problems. Here, we propose a phylogenetic hypothesis for\n Artemia\n based on two new complete mitogenomes, and determine levels of congruence in the definition of evolutionary units using nuclear and mtDNA data. We used a fossil of\n Artemia\n to calibrate the molecular clock and discuss divergence times within the genus. The hypothesis proposed herein suggests a more recent time frame for lineage splitting than previously considered. Phylogeographic analyses were performed using GenBank available mitochondrial and nuclear markers. Evidence of gen e flow, identified through discordances between nuclear and mtDNA markers, was used to reconsider the specific status of some taxa. As a result, we consider\n Artemia\n to be represented by five evolutionary units: Southern Cone, Mediterranean—South African, New World, Western Asian, and Eastern Asian Lineages. After an exhaustive bibliographical revision, unavailable names for nomenclatural purposes were discarded. The remaining available names have been assigned to their respective evolutionary lineage. The proper names for the evolutionary units in which brine shrimps are structured remain as follows:\n Artemia persimilis\n Piccinelli & Prosdocimi, 1968 for the Southern Cone Lineage,\n Artemia salina\n (Linnaeus, 1758) for the Mediterranean-SouthAfrican Lineage,\n Artemia urmiana\n Günther, 1899 for the Western Asian Lineage, and\n Artemia sinica\n Cai, 1989 for the Eastern Asian Lineage. The name\n Artemia monica\n Verrill, 1869 has nomenclatural priority over\n A. franciscana\n Kellogg, 1906 for naming the New World Lineage. This interaction has favoured the expansion of some species but compromising the survival of others. Mediterranean native populations of\n Artemia salina\n from coastal salterns and lagoons are facing the presence and expansion of the introduced and invasive American species\n Artemia monica\n (= \n A\n .\n franciscana\n ). However, this species could not be the only threat. Parthenogenetic populations of the Asian species\n A\n .\n urmiana\n and\n A\n .\n sinica\n are widespread along the Mediterranean and other areas of the world. In this work, with the use of large\n cox1\n and mitogenomic datasets, phylogenetic and phylogeographic inferences, and a time calibrated tree, we confirmed the Asian origin and recent arrival of the current Western Mediterranean parthenogenetic populations of\n Artemia\n . In addition, the replacement of Iberian populations of\n A\n .\n salina\n by Asiatic parthenogenetic populations lead us to recognize parthenogens as invasive. Current salterns development and commercial importance of\n Artemia\n make human-mediated introduction probable. These results demonstrate again the impact that changing human interests have on population expansion or decline of species adapted to anthropogenic habitats.\n Artemia salina\n decline makes urgent the implementation of conservation measures such as its use in fish farming and salt production or its inoculation in inland salterns.\n \n , \n Resumen\n \n Las artemias (\n Artemia\n ) han experimentado expansiones demográficas y cambios en sus áreas de distribución como resultado de su interacción con los humanos desde los inicios de la producción de sal. Stochasticity of dispersal events and the irregular distribution of its habitat might lead to low levels of population connectivity and genetic diversity, and consequently, populations with limited persistence through time. Indeed, by using genomic data (SNPs), we found a strong genetic structure among some of the geographically isolated Iberian populations of\n B. media.\n Interestingly, we also obtained high estimates of effective population sizes. Lack of suitable habitat between populations (absence of a “stepping stone” network) and strong genetic differentiation suggest limited dispersal success in\n B. media\n . However, the high effective population sizes observed ensure persistence of\n B. media\n populations against genetic stochasticity (genetic drift). These results indicate that rescue-effect might not be essential for population persistence if they maintain high effective population sizes able to hold adequate levels of genetic diversity. Tanymastix stagnalis is one of the most widespread species of Anostraca and previous studies revealed an unclear geographical pattern of mtDNA genetic diversity. Here, we analyze populations from the Iberian and Italian Peninsulas, Central Europe, and Scandinavia, with the aim to characterize the patterns of genetic diversity in a spatio-temporal framework using mtDNA and nuclear markers to test gene flow among close populations. For these aims we built a time-calibrated phylogeny and carried out Bayesian phylogeographic analyses using a continuous diffusion model. Our results indicated that T. stagnalis presents a deeply structured genetic diversity, including 7 ancient lineages, some of them even predating the Pleistocene. The Iberian Peninsula harbors high diversity of lineages, with strong isolation and recent absence of gene flow between populations. Dispersal at local scale seems to be the prevailing dispersal mode of T. stagnalis, which exhibits a pattern of isolation-by-distance in the Iberian Peninsula. We remark the vulnerability of most of these lineages, given the limited known geographic distribution of some of them, and the high risk of losing important evolutionary potential for the species.", This species was described in 2016 in the Moroccan Atlas Mountain range on the other side of the Strait of Gibraltar, 102 km away from this new Iberian location. Sequencing a fragment of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) showed a higher genetic diversity in Morocco, but only one haplotype in the Iberian populations, suggesting recent dis¬persal from Morocco to Spain, possibly mediated by birds through their annual migrations.
