"note": "
In this paper, geographers Gregory and Healey describe the implications of the recent emergence of historical GIS. Historical GIS, for them, centers around the construction of digital databases for spatial analysis and visualization of historical data. The GIS advanced modes for establishing spatio-temporal relationships in large datasets have facilitated the challenge of several historical orthodoxies. The development of historical GIS has, as Gregory and Healy points out, furthermore sparked an increasing interest among historians for geography and spatial analysis. The development of the field has so far been hampered by time-consuming database construction, and limitations in the capabilities of software. Gregory and Healy thus provides a useful account of some of the central challenges, such as database construction, and software limitations, that are likely to face any project that employs historical GIS. The paper is, however, over six years old, and it is worth pointing out that much has happened both in terms of new technologies and modes of research since it was initially published.
\n

\n

\n

\n

",

In the 1960's, historian Arno Peters launched an alternative world-map projection as a critique towards what he saw as the eurocentric and imperialist world-view inherent in the dominant Mercator projection. Producing a digital interactive platform for visualizing a history of global theater involves concerns with a postcolonial politics of representation. Such concerns, following Peters, include the choice of map projection. While Crampton's account of the Peter's projection provides a useful starting point to think through the politics of representing imperialist histories , such politics undoubtedly stretch far beyond the choice of mapping projections.
",

It gives numerous inspiring examples of different ways to effectively visualize time-space narratives. While Tufte's examples are all analog, there are many valuable lessons on integration and presentation that apply also to digital platforms. Tufte's account of data visualization, however, is a very depoliticized one, reminiscent of traditional cartographic theories of effective map design. Tufte's critique is, in other words, not so concerned with the politics of representation, as it is with the right choice of fonts and colors.
",

            "note": "
In his classic book Envisioning Information, Edward Tufte, renowned scholar of data visualization, provides a rich and intriguing account of how to effectively visualize information. The sixth chapter, Narratives of Space and Time, is of special interest to digital history projects. Tufte's critique is, in other words, not as concerned with the politics of representation, as it is with the right choice of fonts and colors.
",

In the 1960's, historian Arno Peters launched an alternative world map projection as a critique towards what he saw as the eurocentric and imperialist world-view inherent in the dominant Mercator projection. Producing a digital interactive platform for visualizing a history of global theater involves concerns with a postcolonial politics of representation. Such concerns, following Peter's, include the choice of map projection. While Crampton's historical account of the Peter's projection provides a useful starting point to think through politics of representation of our project, such politics undoubtedly stretch far beyond the choice of mapping projections.
\n

",

            "note": "
Little's article takes a macro perspective on digital humanities, considering the changing perceptions and practices of information professionals, scholars, and artists in relation to digital humanities. His article defines DH more broadly than most, including projects like Google books and Project Gutenberg as falling within that category; however, this broad definition serves to underline his point, which is that digital technology has quickly become ubiquitous, and must be incorporated into scholarly practice, both in creation and distribution of information. Touching on problems of adequate digital education in library and information science programs, as well as methods of organization of the vast quantities of digital information, Little presents a useful overview of issues in digital scholarship.
",

            "note": "
Working at the Centre for Computing in the Humanities at King's College London, Jessop's article considers issues inherent in the use of data visualization in various humanities fields. The central hindrance Jessop focuses on is the perception of the difficulty and expense of implementing digital mapping to visualize humanities data. Solutions proposed through examples include examining tools with lower time and financial costs, or making use of GIS's interoperability capabilities if GIS is necessary. However, because this article was written in 2004, it is likely that many of the issues discussed have been resolved in the meantime, and also likely that a greater number of non-geographer academics know more about computers and GIS. However, this does highlight an important point - it is a critical but often forgotten step in any project to thoroughly evaluate the range of tools available, and select one that best meets the needs of the project as well as the skill set of the individuals required to implement it.
",

While these topics have traditionally been viewed as qualitative areas of study, Kera sees digital humanities and scholarship as a means of blurring the meaning on realism, and how that affects data analysis. By looking at data visualization as a means of revealing reality, Kera points out the changes in perception that digital culture has brought about, and connects data visualization with traditional art theoretical concepts.
\n
Kera also points out the use of data visualizations in digital art as a means of highlighting and disputing social issues. Several online art projects are mentioned, and demonstrate the juxtaposition of empirical data and artistic interpretation. These projects, and this topic, are of particular interest for the Global Theatre Histories Project, as a central goal of that project is to examine the role of imperialism in the spread of theatre throughout the world.
",

            "note": "
This book, written by Angela Pao, takes a different look at the connections between theatre and imperialism. It discusses how French theatre in the nineteenth century shaped the popular French perspective of the Orient. While it does not directly look at the exchange of theatre through imperialism, it provides interesting insight into other ways how theatre can shape opinions by bringing ideas of foreign places to one's home region. It may not directly inform the Global Theatre History project in terms of helping to establish direct links of the spread of theatre, but it does serve as a reminder that theatre and globalization are connected in many different ways, whether it is spreading a culture to other countries or bringing ideas about other countries back.
",

            "note": "
Nandi Bhatia, a professor of literature at University of Western Ontario, wrote this text looking specifically at postcolonial India. It provides an in-depth look at theatre in a colonial context in a specific area, giving a level of detail that other texts on theatre and imperialism do not have. Although it primarily considers theatre as an instrument of anti-colonial resistance, it does also look at how \"Western\" theatre (particularly Shakespeare) was brought into India through colonial rule. This is another helpful perspective for considering the connection between theatre and imperialism which Global Theatre History hopes to explore.
",

            "note": "
This work, edited by Cornell professor Ellen Gaino, presents a collection of essays about theatre and imperialism. These essays provide insight into theatre in a colonial context, looking at it both as a instrument to support and resist colonial rule. This collection is dramatically relevant to Global Theatre History because it brings together a number of scholars who are considering the same issue: looking at theatre in the context of imperialism of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. However, being from 1995, this book is sightly old and may not reflect the most recent scholarship. Nonetheless it provides a wealth of useful information for understanding the intertwining of theatre and imperialism.
",
