"abstractNote": "The writer explores the explicatory powers of the method of hypothetical artwork modeling on a problematic taken from color theory. A hypothetical artwork is a work that exists only as a mental construction of an art theorist. The explicatory power of such an artwork is then used by the art theorist to argue his own art theory. This kind of argumentation can be deceiving, as it makes a statement about real art on the basis of fiction, but when the construction of hypothetical artwork is intelligibly dealt with as a construction of a lucid theoretical model, it can also be put to good use. The writer explores the usefulness of the method in showing that the painters' fallacy concerning primary colors is not necessarily a fallacy at all.",

"abstractNote": "Color presented 19th-century thinkers with an array of questions that were at once theoretical and material, artistic and scientific, and aesthetic and commercial. A number of treatises, among them George Field's Chromatics and Chromatography, brought elements of vision to bear on the composition and use of pigments of other colored materials. In an 1878 essay titled “On the relation of Optics to Painting,” German physiologist Hermann von Helmholtz applied his synthesis of 19th-century color science specifically to the practice of painting as well as to the act of viewing artworks. This view was reinforced in 1879 by Modern Chromatics, written by U.S. physicist Ogden Rood, whose neat and visually attractive color chart integrates the aesthetic, painterly, scientific, and commercial.",

"abstractNote": "Prehistoric archaeology provides the temporal depth necessary for understanding the evolution of the unique human ability to construct and use complex symbol systems. The long-standing focus on language, a symbol system that does not leave direct evidence in the material record, has led to interpretations based on material proxies of this abstract behavior. The ambiguities resulting from this situation may be reduced by focusing on systems that use material objects as the carriers of their symbolic contents, such as color symbolism. Given the universality of some aspects of color symbolism in extant human societies, this article focuses on the 92,000-year-old ochre record from Qafzeh Cave terrace to examine whether the human capacity for symbolic behavior could have led to normative systems of symbolic culture as early as Middle Paleolithic times. Geochemical and petrographic analyses are used to test the hypothesis that ochre was selected and mined specifically for its color. Ochre is found to occur through time in association with other finds unrelated to mundane tasks. It is suggested that such associations fulfill the hierarchical relationships that are the essence of a symbolic referential framework and are consistent with the existence of symbolic culture. The implications of these findings for under- standing the evolution of symbolic culture in the contexts of the African and Levantine prehistoric records are explored.",

The term color harmony is not, however, a concise, descriptive term; rather, it is one with a wide range of meanings because of any or all of several conditional attributes. These comics depict female nudity and drug use. The public censorship of any medium is an interesting topic to research, and this source contains examples of the types of comics that were censored in America and why they were censored.</p>",
