"abstractNote": "\"...most people believe that technology is a staunch friend. There are two reasons for this. First, technology is a friend. It makes life easier, cleaner, and longer. Can anyone ask more of a friend? Second, because of its lengthy, intimate, and inevitable relationship with culture, technology does not invite a close examination of its own consequences. It is the kind of friend that asks for trust and obedience, which most people are inclined to give because its gifts are truly bountiful. But, of course, there is a dark side to this friend. Its gifts are not without a heavy cost. Stated in the most dramatic terms, the accusation can be made that the uncontrolled growth of technology destroys the vital sources of our humanity. It creates a culture without a moral foundation. It undermines certain mental processes and social relations that make human life worth living. Technology, in sum, is both friend and enemy. This book attempts to describe when, how, and why technology became a particularly dangerous enemy.\"",

"abstractNote": "This study considers whether Model Based Inquiry (MBI) is a suitable mechanism for facilitating science as inquiry to allow students to develop deep understandings of difficult concepts, while also gaining better understandings of science process and the nature of science. This manuscript also considers time devoted to MBI in comparison to more traditional demonstration and lecture (TDL) teaching methods, while also revealing the MBI strategy implemented in the physics classroom. Pre-, post-, and delayed- revised versions of the Physics, Attitudes, Skills, and Knowledge Survey (PASKS) were administered to two groups of students, those taught a unit on buoyancy with a TDL instructional strategy (n = 26) and those taught the same buoyancy unit, but with the MBI instructional strategy (n = 28). The PASKS focuses on student achievement in terms of science content, science process/reasoning, nature of science, and student attitude toward science. Through quantitative methods the findings revealed statistical differences when considering the pre-, post-, and delayed- measures with significant differences found overall and on each scale. This indicated improved achievement overall and on each scale with the exception of attitude scale for both groups. Additionally, the findings revealed no statistical differences between groups (i.e., TDL & MBI).",

"abstractNote": "The value of models and modelling to traditional scientific research is well docu- mented (Black 1962). Models are important in scientific research both in formu- lating hypotheses to be tested and in describing scientific phenomena (Gilbert, J. 1995). In the past decade the value of models and modelling to science education has been increasingly recognized among the science education reform movements (National Science Board Commission on Precollege Education in Mathematics 1983, Giere 1991, NRC 1996, AAAS 1993). At present, models and modelling are considered integral parts of scientific literacy (Gilbert and Boulter 1998, Gilbert, S. 1991, Gilbert, J. 1993, Linn and Muilenberg 1996, Perkins 1986).",

"abstractNote": "The current study suggests embedding of modelling in inquiry. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to empirically identify the effects of implementation of model-based inquiry on students’ scientific process skills and conceptual knowledge. This study was framed theoretically by the Practice Framework which reflects model-based inquiry view of science. True-experimental design using quantitative research methods was carried out for the study. Participants of the research were pre-service physics teachers. Model-based inquiry was implemented in the experimental group while the control group worked in an inquiry-based environment. Therefore, guided inquiry was implemented in both groups but the control group did not build a model. The inquiry intervention lasted 10 weeks and was related to dynamics concepts. Data were collected by using the Integrated Process Skill Test and the Force Concept Inventory. The participants in both groups did not show any difference in their overall scores of scientific process skills and conceptual knowledge after the instruction However, when their scores of scientific process skills were compared in terms of the five dimensions in the test, it was found that while the control group increased their performances significantly in the dimensions of identifying variables and stating hypothesis, the experimental group improved their scores significantly in these two dimensions as well as in the dimensions of operational definitions and data and graph interpretations. This study adds to the limited research in the area of model-based inquiry by examining its effectiveness when used in a science classroom.",

"abstractNote": "Recent high profile hackings have cost companies millions of dollars resulting in an increasing priority to protect government and business data. Universities are under increased pressure to produce graduates with better security knowledge and skills,\nparticularly emerging cybersecurity skills. Although accredited undergraduate computing programs recognize the need to solve this problem, these computing programs are constrained by accreditation standards and have limited ability to modify\ntheir curricula. This paper discusses a case study on how one Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited undergraduate IT program created a strategy to continue to teach existing security-related topics as well as emerging cybersecurity topics within its IT curriculum without increasing credit requirements. The faculty developed an IT Security-related and Cybersecurity Curriculum Taxonomy to identify strategies to move security-related topics taught in the\nhigher level courses to lower and intermediate courses. Thus emerging cybersecurity topics could be added to high-level courses. The faculty also created the IT Student Learning (Security-related) Taxonomy by combining Bloom’s Taxonomy’s six levels of thinking with Webb’s Depth of Knowledge Model. This student learning taxonomy enabled the faculty to review the\nstudent learning outcomes for each of the existing security-related core topics and develop new ones for the emerging cybersecurity topics. Challenges, benefits, and application of this strategy to other disciplines are discussed.",

"abstractNote": "Connectivism provides a lens for librarians to design meaningful information literacy (IL) instruction because it integrates student learning with the digital age and with the constantly-evolving nature of information. The purpose of this paper is to extend the discussion on connectivism and IL to the use of tablet devices. Mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, are popular on college campuses and are gaining ground as an educational tool. However, prior to implementing new technology in the classroom, educators should be able to explain the instructional purpose of the technology and how it will enhance or enable learning. This article presents an overview of connectivist theory, the theory’s relationship to IL, and the use of tablets during instruction. The author provides examples of a connectivist approach to IL instruction that incorporates the use of iPads.",

It aims to evaluate the outcomes of library information literacy instruction using this module combined with in-person help. Results show a significant improvement in information literacy skills from a pre-test to a post-test. Focus group and survey data indicate that most students preferred the self-paced learning style of the online module and that the content of the module helped them to conduct library research for the course. This study also considers best practices for online library instruction. A blended instruction approach provides students with the flexibility to learn from a variety of formats at their own pace and also reduces library staff workload, especially for a large course.",

"abstractNote": "This small-scale practical action research project set out to investigate how undergraduate Primary Teacher Education students in a UK university find and evaluate information, and whether short online tutorials hosted in the university’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) could support their information literacy development. Surveys and focus groups were used to explore students' information-seeking behaviours. Students then collaborated with the researcher in selecting, designing and creating a series of short video tutorials demonstrating key information literacy-related Library tools.\n\nThe project found that many students navigate both physical and online information environments with their focus on immediate short-term goals, without exploring; that key IL messages only communicated once are quickly forgotten; and that without frequent reminders of Library tools students devise their own workarounds to their IL problems, with varying degrees of success.\n\nThe article therefore argues, from the project findings and the existing higher education literature on strategic student behaviour online, that while students value short visual IL tutorials, librarians’ time and effort in producing these risks being wasted if it is simply assumed that students will find and use them unprompted. These findings have implications for professional practice in terms of how such resources are positioned and promoted.\n\nThis is believed to be one of the first studies within the librarianship literature exploring the effect of students’ strategic navigation of online environments on their awareness of information literacy tools and resources, and suggesting tactics to address the resulting issues. It is also unusual in having collaborated with students in designing and producing information literacy resources.",

The second part examined the practical application of this tool, with examples of several university libraries. In all, 13 academic libraries were included as the sample, which were chosen randomly from a global search on the Internet under the thematic basis for the theme of the study and thus evaluate the different employment opportunities of mobile telephony in developing skills information on users. The study is complemented with an assessment from the practice of the applicability of the principles described, arriving at conclusions and recommendations.\n\nFindings\nThe purpose of the study is to recognize the use given to mobile technologies from libraries, particularly the use of QR codes, to help meet the demands of users in relation to skills training information, just as you may have the need.\n\nOriginality/value\nThe benefits of the use of mobile devices for the development of information literacy actions are identified and the set of actions that can be implemented for training information skills through the use of QR codes are set based on all outlined by the Association of College and Research Libraries goals.",

"abstractNote": "The new Internet technologies have infiltrated in a stunning way the academic environment, both at individual and at institutional level. Therefore, more and more teachers have started educational blogs, librarians are active on Twitter, other educational actors curate web content, students post on Instagram or Flickr, and university departments have Facebook pages and/or YouTube accounts etc.\n\nToday, the use of web technology has become “a legitimate activity in many areas of higher education” (Waycott, 2010) and a considerable shift to digital academic research has gradually occurred. Teachers are encouraging students to take up digital tools for research and writing, thus revealing new ways of using information and communication technologies for academic purposes and not just for socializing.\n\nThe main objective of this paper is to investigate the effects of integrating diverse digital, Web 2.0 tools and resources and OERs/MOOCs in research and in the construction of students’ academic texts. We aim to stress the increasing influence of digital and online tools in academic research and writing.\n\nTeachers, specialists, and students alike are affected by this process. In order to show how, we explore the following issues: What is Research 2.0? Which digital/online tools have we used to assist our students? What are the challenges for academic research using digital / web 2.0 tools? And how do digital tools shape academic research?",

The goal of this paper\nis to explore certain theories for our plans and actions in technology-enabled learning. Although\npresented as a successor to previous learning theories, connectivism alone is insufficient to\ninform learning and its support by technology in an internetworked world. However, because of\nits presence in massive open online courses (MOOCs), connectivism is influential in the practice\nof those who take these courses and who wish to apply it in teaching and learning. Thus\nconnectivism is perceived as relevant by its practitioners but as lacking in rigour by its critics.\nFive scenarios of change are presented with frameworks of different theories to explore the\nvariety of approaches educators can take in the contexts for change and their associated\nresearch/evaluation. I argue that the choice of which theories to use depends on the scope and\npurposes of the intervention, the funding available to resource the research/evaluation, and the\nexperience and philosophical stances of the researchers/practitioners.",
