This study unveils an innovative retrieval framework that consists of a Large Language Model (LLM)-powered frontend and an open-source library discovery platform in the backend and integrates both of them through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). In this framework, VuFind is used as the backend library discovery system, which can accumulate metadata from different data sources like Koha ILS, Greenstone, Omeka Classic, and DSpace and integrate it with Claude Desktop, which is an LLMbased natural language assistant, via a locally deployed MCP server. This integration improves user experience and search accuracy through the implementation of context-aware, multilingual, and natural language information retrieval. The performance of this integrating framework was analyzed by using a set of retrieval scenarios and demonstrated its capabilities to perform the semantic queries and deliver more relevant search results. Although some limitations were identified in structured queries such as call number retrieval. The conclusion of this study highlights how this MCP-based framework has the potential to transform the library discovery services from keywordbased interfaces toward more user-friendly, NLP-based conversational systems. Enhancements in security, scalability, and integration with other open-source LLMs and library discovery services, as well as proprietary ones, are the future suggestions of this study.", Southern University began using a VuFind implementation as the default access to the library catalogue on the library Web page while maintaining a secondary link to the traditional Voyager \"classic\" catalogue. VuFind is an open- source product that has been adopted and adapted by all the state universities and colleges in the state of Georgia. For approximately ten years, Georgia libraries have used Voyager as their catalogue, and it remains available to users as the \"classic\" search option. This report examines the local VuFind implementation compared to the more traditional Voyager implementation, emphasizing the differences in the searching capabilities of each. It has seven branches, more than 300 employees, and a $21 million budget. In 2011, it circulated 8.25 million items. While 20% of the patrons prefer ebooks, they represent only 2% of the library's holdings and circulation. Like many public libraries, DCL began to acquire ebooks with OverDrive, Inc and now offers approximately 7,000 items in this collection. DCL is an early adopter of the 3M Cloud Library service as well, but it is not yet online. Through its trailblazing efforts, it now owns the ebook files and hosts another 7,000 titles on its Adobe Content Server. These 7,000 titles have been acquired directly from publisher contacts, with a discount. Like many libraries today, Douglas County Libraries found itself in a difficult situation when purchasing ebooks. For libraries, VuFind can be applied over an ILS, discovery system, or even discrete holdings such as e-books, digital repositories, and other specialized collections. Beyond what might be considered a traditional academic, public, or consortial implementation, commercial, state, and government entities, as well as museums and archives, have also leveraged VuFind’s powerful Apache Solr search platform in order to showcase paintings, objects, sheet music, photographs, historical documents, and other types of graphic records. Since 2008, VuFind has enjoyed global implementation and currently supports 25 languages.
