"abstractNote": "Within modern society, business organizations have a co-evolutionary relationship with society and ecosystems. Business organizations face highly diverse risks which they have to recognize, reflect on and handle. Climate change and its impacts clarify the need for managing overall system risk. Research has shown that climate vulnerability of business organizations in the German food industry is characterized by impacts that, in particular, affect business organizations indirectly. Indirect climate change caused impacts are complex, uncertain and characterized by a high degree of unpredictability. They focus on the derived social, ecological, economic and cultural consequences of the direct physical impacts from a worldwide perspective. This paper shows that introducing resilience thinking helps to identify strategic risks and opportunities coping with climate change caused impacts in sense of corporate climate adaptation strategies. Furthermore, it is shown from a strategic management perspective that mitigation is a profound element of long term adaptation strategies.",

"abstractNote": "The aim of this paper is to advance research on sustainable innovation by adopting a business model perspective. Through a confrontation of the literature on both topics we find that research on sustainable innovation has tended to neglect the way in which firms need to combine a value proposition, the organization of the upstream and downstream value chain and a financial model in order to bring sustainable innovations to the market. Therefore, we review the current literature on business models in the contexts of technological, organizational and social innovation. As the current literature does not offer a general conceptual definition of sustainable business models, we propose examples of normative requirements that business models should meet in order to support sustainable innovations. Finally, we sketch the outline of a research agenda by formulating a number of guiding questions.",

"abstractNote": "Sustainable development requires radical and systemic innovations. Such innovations can be more effectively created and studied when building on the concept of business models. This concept provides firms with a holistic framework to envision and implement sustainable innovations. For researchers, the concept provides an analytical tool that allows them to assess the interplay between the different aspects that firms combine to create ecological, economic, and social value. In addition, the business model concept provides a link between the individual firm and the larger production and consumption system in which it operates. This paper provides an introduction to the special issue, which emerged from selected papers presented at the ERSCP-EMSU 2010 Conference held in Delft, The Netherlands. Papers in the special issue cover a broad range, from a conceptual discussion resulting in a research agenda, the assessment of diffusion of specific business models such as Product-Service Systems, the introduction of new management tools for business transition management, to case studies on how specific business models evolved in specific communities. Together, these papers provide insight into the promise of the business model concept for understanding and advancing sustainable innovation.",

"abstractNote": "Whether to secure critical resource inputs or responding to demands ranging from local communities to international stakeholders, leading multinational companies increasingly engage in ecosystem management by developing operations models with biodiversity, ecosystem conservation, and ecosystem restoration in mind—often in partnership with international conservation organizations. While promising to infuse business strategy with knowledge from natural science, specifically ecology, the emerging practice appears well ahead of research in this area. This article aims to encourage research into how organizations can manage their relationship with the natural environment so as not to destroy the very life-supporting foundations provided by nature. Bridging knowledge domains, the article introduces key concepts from ecology and social ecology to organization and management studies— ecosystems, biodiversity, ecosystem services , and ecological resilience . We illustrate these concepts with advances in ecosystems management and conclude with suggestions for future research in sustainability management, organization theory, and strategic management.",

"abstractNote": "This paper proposes a framework to create enterprise resilience using service oriented architecture approach (SOA). The proposed framework is based on two enablers of enterprise resilience: i) the capability of an enterprise to connect systems, people, processes, and information in a way that allows enterprise to become more connected and responsive to the dynamics of its environment, stakeholders, and competitors; ii) the alignment of information technology and business goals. The former requires inter and intra- enterprise level interoperability and integration, and the latter requires simplification of the underlying technology infrastructure and creation of a consolidated view of, and access to, all available resources in the enterprise that can be attained by well-defined enterprise architecture. Based on these two key enablers, we outline a theoretical model which explains how SOA can help in creating enterprise resilience. This model defines enterprise resilience as a function of enterprise flexibility, adaptability, agility, and efficiency.",
