It reveals converging policies on women’s employment and public childcare, and highlights the often overlooked gender bias in housing access. The article argues that housing distribution was an important element of women's social aspirations in the 1950s and a crucial drive for women’s employment across the Iron Curtain. By focusing on the long 1950s, this study fills a gap in comparative women’s social history.
