Nestled in Eunpyeong Hanok Village, Myeonglinheon is a three-level dwelling organized around a spacious courtyard, with a public ground floor for gatherings, a private upper level oriented toward Mount Bukhansan, and a basement for leisure pursuits. Hand-carved latticework, turtle-shaped balusters, and paper windows contribute to a timeless feel. At Gahoe-dong in Bukchon, Sugyeongjae combines a 1930s wooden hanok house with a new semi-basement for cultural use. Based on archival materials from China, Tanzania, and the UK, it moves beyond traditional architectural historiography relying on the comparative formal analysis of monumental cultural buildings to attend to the entanglement between architectural technologies and politics in the Chinese-built industrial infrastructures both within and beyond China. Drawing on theories of techno-politics and critical temperature studies, it develops the notion of ‘thermal regime’ to capture the often-neglected interdependence between the use of thermal technologies and the exercise of socio-political power. Through the in-depth case studies of Guangzhou Ramie Textile Mill (1956–1958) in southern China and China-aided Friendship Textile Mill (1966–1968) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the article reveals how globally-circulated climatic knowledge and thermal technologies transcending Cold-War rivalries were marshalled by both Chinese and Tanzanian actors, driven by their common desire for socialist industrialisation. Hundreds of those light stations faced ruin until local initiatives, working in partnership with the US Coast Guard and state and federal agencies, found innovative ways to preserve the light towers and their supporting structures as heritage sites and museums. The American lighthouse preservation movement ranks among historic preservationists' greatest success stories. The restoration of the St. Augustine Lighthouse on the northeastern coast of Florida, spearheaded by an area women's organization in the 1980s, provides a noteworthy example of such a reorientation. Built in 1874 as one of the tallest lighthouse towers in the nation, St. Augustine's beacon today welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to climb its tower and view exhibits in its maritime museum. Drawing upon spiritual associations with lighthouses and the marketability of the towers' iconic imagery, the lighthouse reclamation effort offers wider civic lessons in government partnership and problem-solving. Reflecting contrasting ideologies in the East and in the West, towns grew to meet housing needs and goals of economic and social modernization. This article explores the impact of their planning on women’s social mobility. Focusing on Basildon (UK) and Pernik (Bulgaria), it examines how the interplay between different ideologies and reality brought about surprisingly similar outcomes. This study examines how gender equality and women’s advancement were hindered by heavy industry in Pernik, while in Basildon's housing programme and diverse industries stimulated women’s employment without prioritising gender equality. It reveals converging policies on women’s employment and public childcare, and highlights the often overlooked gender bias in housing access. The article argues that housing distribution was an important element of women's social aspirations in the 1950s and a crucial drive for women’s employment across the Iron Curtain. By focusing on the long 1950s, this study fills a gap in comparative women’s social history. It demonstrates that the ‘golden’ era of social mobility for women was delayed by at least a decade compared to men in both the UK and Bulgaria, despite the latter's communist regime’s declared Depictions of the two monoliths reveal the networked exchanges of artistic ideas in the sixteenth century that engaged architecture within a long history of the reception of imperial conquest, including the subjugation of bodies under empire. Receptions of ancient, anthropomorphized columns flourished in sixteenth-century Europe, and the resulting discourse determined an iconography of these columns as architecture’s enslaved captives. The columns at Tivoli bore meaning as architectural fragments made of quarried and extracted African stone that attested to imperial Rome’s vast reach into its provinces. En su construcción se emplearon materiales locales como piedra de coral, cal y madera de manglar, junto con mano de obra artesanal, y se ejecutó mediante técnicas tradicionales que minimizan la huella de carbono al prescindir de maquinaria.
