Surfaces which do not have direct\nsupport in the input 3D point cloud and hence need not\nbe photo-consistent but represent real parts of the scene\n(e.g. low-textured walls, windows, cars) are important for\nachieving complete reconstructions. We augmented the existing Labatut CGF 2009 method with the ability to cope\nwith these difficult surfaces just by changing the t-edge\nweights in the construction of surfaces by a minimal s-t\ncut. Our method uses Visual-Hull to reconstruct the dif-\nficult surfaces which are not sampled densely enough by\nthe input 3D point cloud. We demonstrate importance of\nthese surfaces on several real-world data sets. In this work we extend the technique to explicitly incorporate\nthe points as interpolation constraints. The extension can be interpreted as\na generalization of the underlying mathematical framework to a screened\nPoisson equation. In contrast to other image and geometry processing\ntechniques, the screening term is defined over a sparse set of points rather\nthan over the full domain. We show that these sparse constraints can\nnonetheless be integrated efficiently. Because the modified linear system\nretains the same finite-element discretization, the sparsity structure is\nunchanged, and the system can still be solved using a multigrid approach.\nMoreover we present several algorithmic improvements that together\nreduce the time complexity of the solver to linear in the number of points,\nthereby enabling faster, higher-quality surface reconstructions.", accurate surface reconstruction. Multiple industrial cameras are mounted on a rectangular shaped frame with a size of 15cm by 15cm in order to collect images from multiple views at once. By using the presented software pipeline, one dense 3D point cloud can be computed efficiently for each shot. The system is particularly designed for close range cultural heritage applications, where the requirements regarding accuracy, density but also acquisition efficiency are high. For each shot up to 3.5 Mio. 3D points can be derived. An area of 60cm by 50cm is covered at a distance of 70cm. Depending on distance and surface texture the points reach a precision of up to 0.2mm. Within this paper, we will present the system design, the data acquisition process, the automatic orientation/registration approach and the dense surface reconstruction method. presents an automatic procedure for combining digital images and laser scanner data in order to have a full representation of a scene. In particular, this procedure will serve photogrammetric close range applications such as 3D digital preservation and documentation of cultural heritages by generating comprehensive virtual reality models. Our method is based on a bundle block adjustment for the orientation estimation of generated images from laser data and camera images by means of an optimized Structure from Motion reconstruction method. This results in having target-free registration of multiple laser scans and absolute image orientations.
