Methodology:

on page 355 of Wells' The Photographic Reader, Lutz and Collins provide a useful methodlolgy, via their discussion of the 1976 photo by Robert Madden of a Venezuelan diamond transaction. - (wells 355-356)

they address the various gazes in the photograph sysematically, showing that each the look excercised by each subject contributes to the balance of power in the photo, as well as the relationship of those fixed relationships had to the photographer and have to the viewer.

\n

to synthasize a question out of the reading, it would be: What do the physical alignments and intersections of gazes in the photograph tell us?

\n

this question can also be sharpened by adding the word about at the end, and following that with another clause.

\n

about the power relationships of the subject culture?

\n

about the bias of the photographer?

\n

about the bias of western ways of looking?

\n

Now, having asked that question, we are obliged to ask; How are these relationships temporal or exaggerated by being fixed in time by the camera?

\n

and what is the effect of the perception of time by the photographer and the viewer on the their perceptions of the scene protrayed by the photograph?

\n

Further, as critics we are moved to ask ourselfves more specific questions;

Which subjectified gaze is most compatible with that of the viewer/audience?

which subject (if more than one exist), is the viewer moved to take interest in? what kind of interest are they urged to take? (sympathetic, angry, disguted, amazed ?)

who is the viewer likely to identify with?, and why? and did the photographer have the final say on this?

When the subject is surprised by the gaze of the Other, the subject is reduced to shame.[3] Lacan does not, at this point, develop his own concept of the gaze, and seems to be in general agreement with Sartre's views on the subject.[4] Lacan is especially taken with Sartre's view that the gaze does not necessarily concern the organ of sight:

Excerpt: Lacan was particularly interested in this aspect of Sartre's gaze that is \"not a seen gaze, but a gaze imagined by me in the field of the Other\" as well as the fact that \"the Other surprises him, the subject, as entirely hidden gaze.\" Lacan takes Sartre's concept of the gaze one step further by asserting that the presence of another person is irrelevant altogether because it is really our own act of looking that causes this feeling. Lacan even goes as far to say that the \"gaze is everything in the field of vision except the actual look of the person looking.\"
