ERP systems are a well-known concept. The available holistic literature and theory in ERP are, however, scarce. This paper surveys current ERP literature and identifies the present state of theory in ERP by formulating propositions for four ERP strategic factors (Cost of ERP Implementation, Implementation Time and Return On Investment (ROI) Issues, ERP Employee Training, and Effective Use of ERP Features/Applications). The approach used in this research is grounded theory development. The propositions for ERP strategic factors are in turn delineated and evaluated in terms of specific subfactors associated with each factor. This is accomplished by the use of interview protocol and within the context of an in-depth analysis of two companies in different industries that have used ERP systems. The analysis of these case studies results in 15 revised propositions for ERP strategic factors and insights regarding the ERP practices. Based on these strategic factors, strategic subfactors, ERP revised propositions, and insights gained, a set of conclusions, managerial implications, and future research directions is presented. As firms become more innovative in their technical infrastructures and more competitive in their respective industries/verticals, their extended enterprise models include using their previous enterprise resource planning (ERP) investments as foundations for prioritizing additions and for longer-term strategies. The key issue for many firms is how to leverage their ERP implementation to become better partners and collaborators by enabling digital options to exploit business opportunities. This paper ascertains the contextual conditions under which ERP system implementations have the greatest impact on intention to adopt digital options. Using empirical data, it finds that the impact of ERP implementation on digital-options adoption intention is moderated by a firm's digital-resource readiness. For information systems (IS) practice, the study suggests that firms should view ERP divisibility as an option value generator for supporting new customers and revenue opportunities. For IS research, it relates digital-options theory to specific measurable constructs and to the firm's digital-resource readiness. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed. A major hindrance to firms that wish to convert from existing legacy systems to ERP systems (such as SAP R/3) is that the process can take 12 to 18 months. This is an especially daunting length of time for small to midsize companies. Many ERP software vendors and consulting firms have developed methods for rapid systems integration, which, it is claimed, can cut implementation time to as little as 5 or 6 months. In this article, we explore the experience of 4 small to midsize companies who implemented SAP R/3 using Accelerated SAP (ASAP), SAP's rapid implementation process. ASAP is a reference-process-based approach to implementing R/3. As such, it does not allow for extensive customization of business processes during implementation. Nevertheless, our study showed that R/3 can be implemented quickly and effectively in small to medium-size firms. ASAP appears to provide the ingredients for a well-structured implementation project. By reducing project scope and complexity, it reduces consulting costs and project risks. By splitting the project into small units with clear short-term goals, it increases the motivation for the project team. Finally, it can form the basis for a continuous improvement effort in which business processes are tuned to the new ERP system. ERP projects delivered in form of contracted projects in a competitive market environment often ignore costs for competitive reasons (Linderoth & Lundqvist, 2004). However, these teaming costs add to the over- all transaction costs of a project. If not budgeted into the individual projects, these costs accumulate at the project portfolio level of project delivery organizations (sellers) and must be managed adequately. One way of minimizing learning costs at the portfolio level is to identify strategic learning projects, which accrue higher than planned (competitive) costs, but lower the costs of future projects and thereby the overall learning costs at the portfolio level. The present study investigated the practices of dealing with costs of learning projects at a Swedish ERP consultancy over a period of six months. The results show how to lower portfolio-level project costs in the long-term through identification of strategic learning projects, with expected budget overruns in the short-term. The study takes a transaction-costs-economic (ICE) perspective. A model shows the impact of short-term learning investments on the lowering of implementation risks in future projects. The model can be used by managers for understanding long-term profitability by exceeding time and budget objectives in the short term. It is important, particularly for SMEs, to recognize the elements for a successful ERP implementation in their environments. This research aims to examine the critical elements that constitute a successful ERP implementation in SMEs. The objective is to identify the constituents within the critical elements. A comprehensive literature review and interviews with eight SMEs in the UK were carried out. The results serve as the basic input into the formation of the critical elements and their constituents. Three main critical elements are formed: critical success factors, critical people and critical uncertainties. Within each critical element, the related constituents are identified. Using the process theory approach, the constituents within each critical element are linked to their specific phase(s) of ERP implementation. Ten constituents for critical success factors were found, nine constituents for critical people and 21 constituents for critical uncertainties. The research suggests that a successful ERP implementation often requires the identification and management of the critical elements and their constituents at each phase of implementation. The results are constructed as a reference framework that aims to provide researchers and practitioners with indicators and guidelines to improve the success rate of ERP implementation in SMEs. In this study, we examine whether ERP system implementations have affected the extent to which firms manage earnings amounts and release dates. We find, for a sample of ERP adopters, that implementations led to increases in the absolute value of discretionary accruals (i.e., greater earnings management). We also find a positive relationship between the extent of ERP module adoption and the extent of earnings management. With respect to earnings release dates, firms with incentives to increase the timeliness of their release dates experienced a decrease in reporting lag after implementing ERP systems. These results should be of interest to financial statement preparers initially adopting or implementing new versions of ERP applications, auditors serving clients with ERP systems, and regulators overseeing the financial markets and consolidation in the ERP industry. Historically ERP consultants usually take a product-selling approach in SMEs, providing limited management consultancy services. However, a more constructive role for management consultants has become an emerging and challenging issue. This study explored the involvement of management consultants in ERP implementation, particularly with internal managers, ERP consultants and other project members. Extensive interviews were conducted with management consultants as well as 47 project members from four different SMEs in Taiwan employing ERP consultants. Using a grounded theory methodology, prior literature was used to sensitize the findings to key concepts of importance. The results were then analyzed and we described how owner-managers regard management consultants and how the consultants use role negotiation skills to work with both internal managers and ERP consultants. The study found resistance toward management consultants primarily from managers in SMEs, and not owner-managers. The relationships between management consultants and SME managers also differed from similar relationships in large organizations. Suggestions are also provided for academics and practitioners along with areas for future research to extend these exploratory findings. Based on a 12-month study of 2,794 employees in a telecommunications firm, we found that ERP system implementation moderated the relationships between three job characteristics (skill variety, autonomy, and feedback) and job satisfaction. Our findings highlight the key role that ERP system implementation can have in altering well-established relationships in the context of technology-enabled organizational change situations. This work also extends research on technology diffusion by moving beyond a focus on technology-centric outcomes, such as system use, to understanding broader job outcomes. ERP systems are implemented as a total business solution that supports major functionalities of business. However, many of the implementations are not success stories. Most post implementation problems are due to the inappropriate selection of systems. This paper describes multi-criteria decision model using Analytic Hierarchy Process for the selection of ERP systems for manufacturing companies. First, ERP evaluation criteria are developed by using past literature and through a questionnaire distributed among Sri Lankan manufacturing companies. Seven major criteria are identified and under each criterion several sub-criteria are identified. Selection of the best suited ERP system leads to a multi-criteria decision making problem as ERP systems should be evaluated based upon many criteria. Using the identified main and sub criteria, an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) model is developed for ranking the ERP software. An example of a case is presented to show the actual implementation of AHP model. Expert Choice software is used to solve this AHP model. Several reports and evidence through case studies underline both the difficulties and the resulting benefits of ERPs. This paper addresses the reasoning behind long implementation times and organizational thunderstorms that tantalise the deployment of ERP systems. It focuses on two aspects of most implementation projects that generate the majority of technical and functional problems and constitute the projects' bottleneck, i.e. code development within ERP systems due to key and unique requirements in a business environment, and localization and reporting needs that companies must adhere to or want to achieve. The approach proposes the classification of functional requirements into business critical and legally necessary, and the distribution of code development for system not fully supported processes among these two classes is discussed. Subsequently, the implementation times and deployment inefficiencies are coupled with the level of code development, and the difficulty of avoiding this for the two requirements' classes, mainly due to user inflexibility and local environment peculiarities, is discussed. Using the Theory of Constraints, a coherent methodology for handling bottlenecks and effectively planning the code development effort is proposed, and trade-offs are derived between successful and on-time ERP implementations with managerial enforcement of best practices fully functional within major ERP systems. The approach is verified through field data from an actual SAP R/3 implementation at the largest manufacturer of packaging products and equipment in Europe.
