Plusieurs tests diagnostiques ont ainsi été proposés et ces comportements de refuge dans le virtuel ont été classés en deux groupes. Premièrement, l’addiction primaire à Internet où l’utilisateur s’adonne aux fonctions communicatives du web ou aux jeux vidéo en réseau : ce type de comportement est conditionné par les fonctions de socialisation du net, comme le montre la forte prévalence de patients isolés, anxieux sociaux ou dépressifs abusant d’Internet. Deuxièmement, l’addiction secondaire à Internet, où l’ordinateur est utilisé comme un outil permettant de renouveler certaines addictions comportementales comme le jeu pathologique ou les achats compulsifs.
