Normally, marriages were arranged with the consent of the bride and her family, but Barlow did not have Lyman's or her father Joseph Lyman Jessop's permission, and it was contested and annulled. Since the 1940's, the influence and authority of the Priesthood Council has increased, usurping the authority of the father and family in these arrangements. In the early 1950's, the FLDS split over this issue of 'placement marriage.' Throughout the 1980's, the council dwindled to one man, Rulon Jeffs, who exercised authority over the entire community, rearranging families and assigning women and children to different husbands based on their loyalty to him. Born in Holland, Mulder's Dutch Mormon family settled near New York City in 1920 and moved to Utah several years later. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1940 and began working as an editor for the church's official publication, 'The Improvement Era.' He finished his master's degree in 1947 and enrolled in Harvard University's American Civilization Program. Following the completion of his Ph.D., he wrote two books, served as the Fulbright lecturer in American literature at Asmania University in Hyderabad, India, lectured at such institutions as Brigham Young University, Duke University, and the University of California, Berkeley, and was active in state and local organizations, including the Utah State Historical Society, the Mormon Letters Association, and the Utah Academy of Arts and Science. Mormon film has come into its own to a large degree as a consequence of its serious engagement with the paradoxes in Mormon culture. Three tensions that are especially rich include the uneasy coexistence of searching and certainty; the faith's disintegration of sacred distance, which blurs the sacred and secular; and yearning for both isolation from and integration into the broader world. Washington, D.C. La`ie, on the northeastern shore of Oahu Island, which in 1865 became the headquarters of the Hawai`i Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, illustrates how native Hawaiians have kept alive stories about their sacred places as a way of resisting spiritual exile while at the same time being faithful to the Mormon church. Tales about the origins of the people and memories of life in Old La`ie, before its development as a plantation town and home of the Polynesian Cultural Center, combine stories of resistance with those of consent, maintaining a spiritual connection to the land despite conversion to Christianity. In this way the Hawaiian meaning of the place lives on despite its being a Mormon and tourist town and despite young people moving away to be educated and returning with new ideas about how things should be administered.
