            "extra": "Visual surveillance (e.g., CCTV) is now an essential part of the urban infrastructure in modern cities. One of the primary aims of visual surveillance is to ensure maximum visual coverage of an area with the least number of visual surveillance installations, which is an NP-Hard maximal coverage problem. The planning of visual surveillance\nis a highly sensitive and costly task that has traditionally been done with a \"gut-feel\" process of establishing sight lines using CAD software. This paper demonstrates the\nArcView extension Isovist Analyst, which automatically identifies a minimal number of potential visual surveillance sites that ensure complete visual coverage of an area. The paper proposes a Stochastical Rank and Overlap Elimination (S-ROPE) method, which iteratively identifies the optimal visual surveillance sites. S-ROPE method is essentially based on a \"greedy\" search technique, which has been improved by a\ncombination of selective sampling strategy and random initialization.",

            "abstractNote": "The space that can be seen from any vantage point is called an isovist and the set of such spaces forms a visual field whose extent defines different isovist fields based on different geometric properties. I suggest that our perceptions of moving within such fields might be related to these geometric properties. I begin with a formal representation of isovists and their fields, introducing simple geometric measures based on distance, area, perimeter, compactness, and convexity. I suggest a feasible computational scheme for measuring such fields, and illustrate how we can visualize their spatial and statistical properties by using maps and frequency distributions. I argue that the classification of fields based on these measures must be a prerequisite to the proper analysis of architectural and urban morphologies. To this end, I present two hypothetical examples based on simple geometries and three real examples based on London's Tate Gallery, Regent Street, and the centre of the English town of Wolverhampton. Although such morphologies can often be understood in terms of basic geometrical elements such as corridors, streets, rooms, and squares, isovist analysis suggests that visual fields have their own form which results from the interaction of geometry and movement. To illustrate how such analysis can be used, I outline methods of partitioning space, covering it with a small number of relatively independent isovists, and perceiving space by recording properties of the isovist fields associated with paths through that space.\n\n\"Download",

            "abstractNote": "Detecting a horizon in an image is an important part of many image related applications such as detecting ships on the horizon, flight control, and port security. Most of the existing solutions for the problem only use image processing methods to identify a horizon line in an image. This results in good accuracy for many cases and is fast in computation. However, for some images with difficult environmental conditions like a foggy or cloudy sky these image processing methods are inherently inaccurate in identifying the correct horizon. This paper investigates how to detect the horizon line in a set of images using a machine learning approach.             "abstractNote": "The inner city (Old Town) of Graz will be the European cultural capital in 2003. In this paper we present preliminary results on the reconstruction and visualization of this kind of cultural heritage data. Starting with a simple block model obtained by converting 2 1/2 dimensional GIS (geographic information system) data we focus on the image based modeling of the facades. Herein we illustrate a robust search for corresponding points to estimate the relative orientation between image pairs.Additional, we outline our real-time rendering approach based on a LOD-R-tree concept. Special attention is paid on the LOD (level of detail) generation for historic buildings where two different ways working in 2D and 3D are explained. The visualization system is communicating asynchronously with a database system storing the LOD-R-tree data structure. This client-server configuration provides interactive navigation through the virtual scene and the scalability of a database management system.",

            "abstractNote": "This paper presents a new method for detecting scale invariant\ninterest points. The method is based on two recent results on scale\nspace: (1) Interest points can be adapted to scale and give repeatable\nresults (geometrically stable). (2) Local extrema over scale of\nnormalized derivatives indicate the presence of characteristic local\nstructures. Our method first computes a multi-scale representation for\nthe Harris interest point detector. We then select points at which a\nlocal measure (the Laplacian) is maximal over scales. This allows a\nselection of distinctive points for which the characteristic scale is\nknown. These points are invariant to scale, rotation and translation as\nwell as robust to illumination changes and limited changes of viewpoint.\nFor indexing, the image is characterized by a set of scale invariant\npoints; the scale associated with each point allows the computation of a\nscale invariant descriptor. Our descriptors are, in addition, invariant\nto image rotation, of affine illumination changes and robust to small\nperspective deformations.             "abstractNote": "We consider the task of 3-d depth estimation from a single still image. We take a supervised learning approach to this problem, in which we begin by collecting a training set of monocular images (of unstructured indoor and outdoor environments which include forests, sidewalks, trees, buildings, etc.) and their corresponding ground-truth depthmaps. Then, we apply supervised learning to predict the value of the depthmap as a function of the image. Depth estimation is a challenging problem, since local features alone are insufficient to estimate depth at a point, and one needs to consider the global context of the image. Our model uses a hierarchical, multiscale Markov Random Field (MRF) that incorporates multiscale local- and global-image features, and models the depths and the relation between depths at different points in the image. We show that, even on unstructured scenes, our algorithm is frequently able to recover fairly accurate depthmaps. We further propose a model that incorporates both monocular cues and stereo (triangulation) cues, to obtain significantly more accurate depth estimates than is possible using either monocular or stereo cues alone.",

            "abstractNote": "This paper presents a robust framework for tracking complex objects in video sequences. Multiple hypothesis tracking (MHT) algorithm reported in (IEEE Trans. Pattern Anal. Mach. Intell. 18(2) (1996)) is modified to accommodate a high level representations (2D edge map, 3D models) of objects for tracking. The framework exploits the advantages of MHT algorithm which is capable of resolving data association/uncertainty and integrates it with object matching techniques to provide a robust behavior while tracking complex objects. To track objects in 2D, a 4D feature is used to represent edge/line segments and are tracked using MHT. In many practical applications 3D models provide more information about the object's pose (i.e., rotation information in the transformation space) which cannot be recovered using 2D edge information. Hence, a 3D model-based object tracking algorithm is also presented. A probabilistic Hausdorff image matching algorithm is incorporated into the framework in order to determine the geometric transformation that best maps the model features onto their corresponding ones in the image plane. 3D model of the object is used to constrain the tracker to operate in a consistent manner. Experimental results on real and synthetic image sequences are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed framework.",

This tracking system extends constrained active contour tracking techniques into three dimensions, placing them within a Lie algebraic framework. This is combined with modern graphical rendering technology to create a system which can track complex three dimensional structures in real time at video frame rate (25 Hz) on a standard workstation without special hardware. The system is based on an internal CAD model of the object to be tracked which is rendered using binary space partition trees to perform hidden line removal. The visible features are identified on-line at each frame and are tracked in the video feed. Analytical and statistical edge saliency are then used as a means of increasing the robustness of the tracking system.",
