"abstractNote": "First-wave ethnographic work in fan studies, especially that of Henry Jenkins, Camille Bacon-Smith, Constance Penley, Roberta Pearson and John Tulloch, remains foundational to contemporary fan scholarship. Jenkins’ work in particular remains relevant for its ongoing commitment to fandom as a social identity and as a network; this contrasts sharply with the work of later scholars who see fandom as a matter of enthusiastic but individual engagement. It is important for fan scholars both to revisit and to emulate first-wave scholarship because the terms of the relationship between fans and the entertainment industry are being radically renegotiated. Fandom is increasingly understood to have economic and promotional value to content producers, and there is a danger that fandom-as-enthusiasm is being encouraged by producers even as fans are in danger of being alienated from their creative labour and from each other as a community.",

"abstractNote": "Marc Bolan, lead singer of T-Rex and purveyor of the glam rock movement, died in 1977. The passenger of a Mini Cooper that crashed into a sycamore tree, Bolan was killed instantly from injuries sustained in the accident.\nWhen reports began circulating in 1998 that the tree was in danger of being felled, fan Fee Mercury Moon formed the T-Rex Action Group (TAG) in an effort to save the tree and the site. The space has been preserved and embellished through TAG’s efforts and self-funded initiatives, transforming what was a space of grisly death into a location for worship, reflection and behaviours often echoing traditional religion. While the shrine attracts pilgrims from around the world, a core Bolan contingent continues, almost 40 years since his death, to in-fight over who controls the right to the memory of Bolan, the place of his death and the rituals performed by visitors to the site. As ideas of heritage and history clash with rising property prices, fans face a battle in which they need to be united, instead of splintered over personal peccadilloes. This article will examine how a physical space, such as the shrine, allows for both the perpetuation of memory as well as the expunging of the icon from the importance of the place, as personal meaning and value become intrinsically tied into fan authenticity and religious rituals and behaviours.",

The five categories of usernames identified include monikers referring to a particular member of the band, names related to ‘shipping’ (imagined romantic relationships between band members) and names related to the labour undertaken by fans on behalf of the fandom. The findings indicate that, in contrast to the popular conception of fandoms as homogeneous groups, fans are in fact employing their usernames in order to (1) emphasize their individuality within the online community; (2) highlight how their engagement with the band differs from that of their fellow fandom members; and (3) promote the labour that they undertake on behalf of the fandom.",

This article argues for the need to analyse the behaviours and motivations of a media-crossing audience according to a more fluid, ephemeral and value-laden transmedia ethos. Specifically, this article uses Captain Marvel – alongside a wide-scale online survey made up of over 200 of the character’s fans – as a case study for examining the politics of transmediality, demonstrating how the migration of the Captain Marvel fan base across multiple platforms and iterations of the character is based not on the lure of interconnected storytelling or world building, but is rather built up of a much more layered transmedia ethos based on feminism, alternativism and a digi-gratis economy.",

"abstractNote": "Fans of one-sixth scale action figures minimize the importance and worth of fashion and dolls in order to counter negative stereotypes that feminize fans in general, especially fans of toys resembling dolls. This apparent anti-fandom wards against further feminization due to fan practices incorporating feminized knowledge, skill and labour to clothe those toys. Previous scholarly analyses minimize or erase the multivalent roles of one-sixth scale action figures. However, this fandom uses both fashion and dolls to alter the roles of action figures, indicating that more complex interactions of fans and their supposed objects of anti-fandom are worth additional academic examination.",

"abstractNote": "One-sixth scale action figure customization warrants more extensive cultural analysis, for three reasons. First, action figure fans express their interests in multiple fandoms simultaneously, thus enabling more multi-dimensional analyses within fan studies. This article defines and discusses the action figure fan practices of Mini-Me figures and photostories in order to illustrate fandom’s multi-dimensional nature. Secondly, action figures, especially Mini-Me figures, reveal new aspects to fans’ relationships with transitional objects. Finally, Mini-Me figures and photostory narratives offer a means to address a previously unstudied genre: fannish fiction. ‘Fannish fiction’ includes original narratives produced by fans incorporating frequently multi-dimensional genres, tropes, and so forth popular with fans. However, unlike fan fiction, fannish fiction is not defined by or dependent upon existing mass media texts, characters, narratives, or worlds. This discussion of action figure customization establishes the need both for further examination of this rich fandom, and also for similar examinations of other fandoms and fan practices as well.",
