            "abstractNote": "Image courtesy of the Image Science & Analysis Laboratory, NASA Johnson Space Center\nhttp://eol.jsc.nasa.gov/\nSarychev Peak Eruption, Kuril Islands\n\nA fortuitous orbit of the International Space Station allowed the astronauts this striking view of Sarychev Volcano (Kuril Islands, northeast of Japan) in an early stage of eruption on June 12, 2009. Sarychev Peak is one of the most active volcanoes in the Kuril Island chain, and it is located on the northwestern end of Matua Island. Prior to June 12, the last explosive eruption occurred in 1989, with eruptions in 1986, 1976, 1954, and 1946 also producing lava flows. Ash from the multi-day eruption has been detected 2,407 kilometers east-southeast and 926 kilometers west-northwest of the volcano, and commercial airline flights are being diverted away from the region to minimize the danger of engine failures from ash intake.\n\nThis detailed astronaut photograph is exciting to volcanologists because it captures several phenomena that occur during the earliest stages of an explosive volcanic eruption. The main column is one of a series of plumes that rose above Matua Island on June 12. The plume appears to be a combination of brown ash and white steam. The vigorously rising plume gives the steam a bubble-like appearance; the surrounding atmosphere has been shoved up by the shock wave of the eruption. The smooth white cloud on top may be water condensation that resulted from rapid rising and cooling of the air mass above the ash column. This cloud is probably a transient feature: the eruption plume is starting to punch through. The structure also indicates that little to no shearing wind was present at the time to disrupt the plume. (Satellite images acquired 2-3 days after the start of activity illustrate the effect of shearing winds on the spread of the ash plumes across the Pacific Ocean.)\n\nBy contrast, a cloud of denser, gray ash—probably a pyroclastic flow—appears to be hugging the ground, descending from the volcano summit. The rising eruption plume casts a shadow to the northwest of the island (image top). Brown ash at a lower altitude of the atmosphere spreads out above the ground at image lower left. Low-level stratus clouds approach Matua Island from the east, wrapping around the lower slopes of the volcano. Only about 1.5 kilometers of the coastline of Matua Island (image lower center) are visible beneath the clouds and ash.",

            "abstractNote": "Dose-limiting side effects of centrally acting opioid drugs have led to the use of topical opioids to reduce the pain associated with chronic cutaneous wounds. However, previous studies indicate that topical morphine application impairs wound healing. This study was designed to elucidate the mechanisms by which morphine delays wound closure. Rats were depleted of sensory neuropeptides by treatment with capsaicin, and full-thickness 4-mm diameter wounds were excised from the intrascapular region. Wounds were treated topically twice daily with 5mM morphine sulfate, 1mM substance P, 1mM neurokinin A, or 5mM morphine combined with 1mM substance P or neurokinin A and wound areas assessed. During closure, wound tissue was taken 1, 3, 5, and 8 days post-wounding from control and morphine-treated rats and immunostained for neurokinin receptors and markers for macrophages, myofibroblasts, and vasculature. Results obtained from capsaicin-treated animals demonstrated a significant delay in the early stages of wound contraction that was reversed by neuropeptide application. Treatment of capsaicin-treated rats with topical morphine did not further delay wound closure, suggesting that topical opioids impair wound closure via the inhibition of peripheral neuropeptide release into the healing wound. Morphine application altered neurokinin-1 and neurokinin-2 receptor expression in inflammatory and parenchymal cells essential for wound healing in a cell-specific manner, demonstrating a direct effect of morphine on neurokinin receptor regulation within an array of cells involved in wound healing. These data provide evidence indicating a potentially detrimental effect of topical morphine application on the dynamic wound healing process.",

            "abstractNote": "The guinea pig bladder is innervated by at least five distinct major classes of extrinsic sensory neurons (Zagorodnyuk et al., 2007). In this study, we have examined the mechanisms of mechanotransduction and chemosensitivity of two classes of bladder afferents that have their endings in the vicinity of the urothelium: stretch-sensitive muscle-mucosal mechanoreceptors and stretch-insensitive, mucosal high-responding afferents. The non-selective P2 purinoreceptor antagonist, pyridoxal phosphate-6-azophenyl-2',4'-disulphonic acid did not affect stretch- or stroking-induced firing of these afferents but significantly reduced the excitatory action of alpha,beta-methylene ATP. Blocking synaptic transmission in Ca(2+)-free solution did not affect stretch-evoked firing but slightly reduced stretch-induced tension responses. Stroking-induced firing of both classes of afferents was also not affected in Ca(2+)-free solution. Blockers of mechano-gated channels, benzamil (100 muM), but not amiloride (100 muM), Gd3+ (100 muM) or SKF 96365 (50 muM), inhibited stretch- and stroking-induced firing. Serotonin (100 muM) applied directly onto receptive fields predominantly activated muscle-mucosal afferents. Muscarine (100 muM) and substance P (100 muM) in 24% and 36% cases activated only mucosal high-responding units. Bradykinin (10 muM), but not prostaglandin E2 (10 muM), excites predominantly mucosal units. High (80 mM) K+ solution activated both afferent classes, however responses of mucosal units were 4 times greater. In contrast to muscle-mucosal units, most mucosal high-responding units were activated by hot Krebs (45-46(o)C), low pH (pH=4) and by capsaicin (3 muM). TRPV1 antagonist, capsazepine (10 muM) was without effect on mechanotransduction by mucosal high-responding afferents. The results show that mechanotransduction of these two types of afferents are not dependant upon Ca(2+)-dependent exocytotic release of mediators, or ATP, and it is likely that benzamil-sensitive stretch-activated ion channels on their endings are involved in direct mechanotransduction. The chemosensitivity to agonists and noxious stimuli differs significantly between these two major classes of bladder afferents that reflects their different physiological and pathophysiological roles in the bladder.",
