            "abstractNote": "Since 2001, faced with accounting scandals and the financial and economic crises, critics are questioning what is being taught in higher education? In response to the criticism that business education fails to expose students to the \"real-world\" social complexities, address moral turpitude, as well as instill a sense of civic awareness, institutions have added a variety of experiential activities. While case studies, roleplaying exercises, internships, and service learning may bring to light real-world examples, enhance a sense of civic responsibility, and promote inquiry of broader global and social issues, we posit that civic engagement and incubator models go beyond these experiences, and show how these engaged learning modalities serve to: put into practice what the students are learning in the classroom; witness the imperfections and incompleteness of the models and frameworks read in textbooks; deepen student engagement of civic/public issues; extend the College's connection to the community and strengthen its civic engagement mission; students' positive exposure in the media reinforcing critical, civic and public speaking skills; foster a campus environment where students, faculty, administrators, alumni and community members are actively engaged; and allow instructors the opportunity to develop interactive teaching practices, knowledge and research agenda.",

In what ways does the moral domain overlap with these largely epistemic and pedagogical issues?             "abstractNote": "After more than 20 years of lamentation, exhortation, and little improvement, writes the author, perhaps it is time to ask a fundamental question: Can critical thinking actually be taught? People who have sought to teach critical thinking have assumed that it is a skill, like riding a bicycle, and that, like other skills, once learned, it can be applied in any situation. Research from cognitive science indicates that thinking is not that sort of skill. The writer discusses the nature of critical thinking and explains why it so difficult both to do and to teach. Studies cited lead to three major conclusions: (1) Critical thinking (as well as scientific thinking and other domain-based thinking) is not a skill, but is context-dependent; (2) Certain metacognitive strategies may be learned that make critical thinking more likely; and (3) Ability to think critically depends on domain knowledge and practice.             "abstractNote": "This book provides information on what works in education, how teachers can find what works, how educational research can find its way into classrooms, and how teachers can apply it to help individual students. Data come from a meta-analysis of research studies on instructional strategies that could be used by K-12 teachers. Nine research-based teaching strategies that have a positive effect on student learning are examined: identifying similarities and differences; summarizing and note taking; reinforcing effort and providing recognition; homework and practice; nonlinguistic representations; cooperative learning; setting objectives and providing feedback; generating and testing hypotheses; and questions, cues, and advance organizers. For each strategy, the book provides statistical effect sizes and shows how they translate into percentile gains for students. Each chapter presents extended classroom examples of teachers and students in action; models of successful instruction; and a variety of frames, rubrics, organizers, and charts to help teachers plan and implement the strategies. After describing the strategies, the book examines specific applications (teaching specific types of knowledge and using the nine categories in instructional planning).             "abstractNote": "Motivated by differences in innovation intensity across advanced economies, this paper presents an empirical examination of the determinants of country-level production of international patents. We introduce a novel framework based on the concept of national innovative capacity. National innovative capacity is the ability of a country to produce and commercialize a flow of innovative technology over the long term. National innovative capacity depends on the strength of a nation's common innovation infrastructure (cross-cutting factors which contribute broadly to innovativeness throughout the economy), the environment for innovation in a nation's industrial clusters, and the strength of linkages between these two. We use this framework to guide an empirical exploration into the determinants of country-level differences in innovation intensity, examining the relationship between international patenting (patenting by foreign countries in United States) and variables associated with the national innovative capacity framework. While there are important measurement issues arising from the use of patent data, the results suggest that the production function for international patents is well-characterized by a small but nuanced set of observable factors. We find that while a great deal of variation across countries is due to differences in the level of inputs devoted to innovation (R&D manpower and spending), an extremely important role is played by factors associated with differences in R&D productivity (policy choices such as the extent of IP protection and openness to international trade, the share of research performed by the academic sector and funded by the private sector, the degree of technological specialization, and each individual country's knowledge \"stock\"). Further, national innovative capacity influences downstream commercialization, such as achieving a high market share of high-technology export markets. Finally, there has been convergence among OECD countries in terms of the estimated level of innovative capacity over the past quarter century.
