and dress studies. Yale University professor Jules Prown's object-based methodology is examined. This methodology premises on the idea that style is inescapably an expression of culture and thus the formal data embodied in objects are valuable as cultural evidence. Prown envisions three stages through which object analysis progresses, which he suggests should be taken in sequence and kept as discrete as possible. The first stage is description, which entails recording the internal evidence of the object itself. This is followed by deduction, which means interpreting the interaction between the object and those who perceive it. Finally, speculation consists of framing hypotheses and questions that lead out from the object to external evidence for testing and resolution. This approach can provide a powerful tool to address the problems of musty antiquarianism or superficial glitz that often beset fashion museum exhibitions.
