We use the case of the Polonoroeste Project in the Brazilian Amazon and its impact on World Bank policy as a concrete example of the advantages of fortifying the quantitative and environmental side of our work. Additionally, based on their interviews with householders, the author positions “household information” with the definition provided by Buckland (1991), which defines information as object. The author concludes, “household information practices thus constitute a negotiated human information system” (p. 19). Overall, the article provides a really interesting framework for understanding information practices in households. Should be useful!

\nIf design, as a “satisficing activity” is more of an art than a science, dealing with messy indeterminate situations and “wicked problems” (Rittel and Webber, 1973), then before designers can solve a design problem they need to understand some basics such as what they are designing, what it should do, and who should use it and in what circumstances. It was argues that ethnography was the method attuned to gathering relevant data in real-world environments, that is, setting in which systems were likely to be used rather than in laboratories or other artificial and remote environments. The “turn to the social” recognized a new kind of end-user, a “real-time, real world” human being and consequently designers turned to social sciences to provide them with some insights, some sensitivities, to inform design (p. 2).

The chapter “Into the Home” focuses specifically on the application of the fieldwork-for-design approach in the home. The goal of the chapter is to present an “initial sketch of the analytic themes we think can help ensure that fieldwork in this setting is more that merely hanging around or looking for a vague purpose: these themes can provide a basis for looking at certain things in certain ways with certain issues in mind” (p. 256). They also discuss previous experiences in this domain of research such as work for a European mobile phone network operator, Orange, to study their Orange@Home project. Some of their discussions of concepts of “family”, “home”, etc. will cross over with the discussion in Kalms (2008). They also provide discussion of “artefacts” and devices in the home.

\nThe aim of this annotated bibliography is to begin to set the direction for a literature review of role of information practices on everyday environmental behaviors. While much current work in areas such as community-based social marketing focuses on the effects of information presentation on behavioral change, this project seeks to better understand information practices in this same context. This literature review is organized into sets of themes geared to addressing this topic.
\nIn particular, this literature review will seek to answer questions such as: What methodological and/or theoretical approaches have been used to address information practices and environmental behavior? What other approaches/frameworks might be applied to this endeavor? What case studies exist on this topic?
\nThe ultimate goal is to propose suggestions for a pilot research project, which will examine the particular ways that active information gathering practices (such as the practice of actively monitoring and gathering energy use data from sensing devices, for example) may translate into everyday behavioral changes that benefit the environment. My methodological framework is situated in social sciences with the end goal to understand information practices in order to drive design questions.

Inuit wayfinding methods are burdensome to learn, requiring years of quiet tutoring and experience, but are perfectly reliable. Concern arose in the mid-1990s that younger, less experienced hunters were beginning to rely too heavily on mechanized conveyances and electronic navigational aids. The use of global positioning system (GPS) units, particularly, has been steadily growing in Igloolik. This paper discusses the changes wrought by GPS use against the backdrop of interacting social and technological change. It argues that an understanding of these changes requires a model of technology that depends on the patterns created by devices rather than the devices (or systems of devices) themselves. A paradigmatic theory of technology based on the work of the philosopher Albert Borgmann is presented, and a distinction is made between technology that is physically and socially engaging and technology that reduces engagement with experience of the land, people, and local knowledge.
