particular biogeographical interest because it lies between the Neotropical and Antarctic regions. A preliminary list of some insect families shows a high proportion of endemic genera and species, supporting the hypothesis that it constitutes a natural area with its own biodiversity. The distribution of some insect species shows great concordance with the area occupied by the Monte Desert, indicating its limits. However the complete series of records are not enough to define the boundaries exactly. The distributional patterns of several endemic species suggest that within Monte there are five natural areas: Northern, Central, Uspallata-Calingasta, Southern, and Península de Valdés. The limits of the Northern and Uspallata-Calingasta areas are due to physiographical features (mountains) whereas the remaining areas are delimited by climatic barriers. An analysis based on phylogenetic information shows that these areas of endemism reflect different values with respect to their biodiversity. distribution of the other species. We postulate that the temporal and spatial\nvariability in litter input generated by woody species is a relevant factor in the generation of edaphic heterogeneity by\nredistribution of nutrients and the physical effects of litter. The objective of this study was to determine the temporal\nand spatial variability in the amount of litter input under the canopy of dominant woody plants (Prosopis flexuosa and Larrea divaricata) and in exposed areas at the Ñacuñán Reserve, in the central zone of the Monte desert. Litterfall was collected during 2 years\nfrom 30-cm-diameter litter traps distributed at three microsites: under P. flexuosa canopy, under L. divaricata canopy, and in exposed areas. Microhabitats beneath Prosopis showed the highest litter input per m2 (between 320 and 527 g/m2), and, consequently, more than 50% of it fell to the soil beneath the canopy of P. flexuosa. Only 10% fell on exposed areas, which exhibited an annual input rate per m2 of a lower order of magnitude than the sites under Prosopis. Litterfall presented a peak in summer as a consequence of convective storms, and a second one in autumn due to phenological\nshedding. Our results suggest that woody species have a central importance in the dynamics of nutrients in arid lands by both\nthe increase of total productivity and litterfall, and the spatial and temporal processes determine non-linear dynamics in ecosystems that can difficult their management. Human settlements in arid lands contribute to the modification of disturbance regimes, including the introduction of new disturbances and the elimination of others. In consequence, they can alter the functional mechanisms that allow systems to overcome limiting factors, leading to desertification. In this revision, we evaluated the effects of the changes on disturbance regimes produced by the different forms of land transformation on the structure and function of ecosystems of the Monte Biogeographical Province, in Argentinean arid west. Two approaches were used: the analysis of land use history and the analysis of the effects of the main disturbances on the dynamics of different communities. We concluded that throughout the history of the Monte Desert, the joint action of natural and anthropic agents has resulted in complex dynamics that lead most area of the Monte to a moderate to severe status of desertification. The modification of the disturbance regime had strong consequences for several aspects of the dynamics of communities, such as species composition and diversity, water dynamics, soil conditions, trophic structure and productivity of Monte Desert ecosystems. B.", "lastName": "Waide" } ], "abstractNote": "Following damage caused by Hurricane Hugo (September 1989) we monitored inorganic nitrogen availability in soil twice in 1990, leaf area index in 1991 and 1993, and litter production from 1990 through 1992 in subtropical wet forest of eastern Puerto Rico. Experimental removal of litter and woody debris generated by the hurricane (plus any standing stocks present before the hurricane) increased soil nitrogen availability and above-ground productivity by as much as 40% compared to unmanipulated control plots. These increases were similar to those created by quarterly fertilization with inorganic nutrients. Approximately 85% of hurricane-generated debris was woody debris >5 cm diameter. Thus, it appeared that woody debris stimulated nutrient immobilization, resulting in depression of soil nitrogen availability and productivity in control plots. This was further suggested by simulations of an ecosystem model (CENTURY) calibrated for our site that indicated that only the large wood component of hurricane-generated debris was of sufficiently low quality and of great enough mass to cause the observed effects on productivity. The model predicted that nutrient immobilization by decaying wood should suppress net primary productivity for 13 yr and total live biomass for almost 30 yr following the hurricane. Our findings emphasize the substantial influence that woody debris has upon nutrient cycling and productivity in forest ecosystems through its effects on the activity of decomposers.
