Spokane boosters - including several local state lawmakers - wanted the archives located downtown at Washington State University's Riverpoint campus. At one point, WSU was so sure it would get the facility that it had $225,000 worth of architectural designs done for the university's proposed addition to the building. But without college library or classroom space tacked onto the building, the archives made little sense for WSU's 48-acre urban campus, university officials said. And the secretary of state's office was reluctant to pay for what would have been the bottom floors of a multistory Riverpoint campus library. The archives ended up in Cheney.
