People living in rural areas may face specific barriers to finding useful health-related information, and their use of information may differ from their urban counterparts. Method. This random-digit dial telephone survey of 253 people (75% female) living in a rural, medically under-serviced area of Ontario, Canada, follows-up a previous interview study to examine with a larger sample issues related to searching for and using health information. Analysis. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the sample and the distribution of responses to each question. Sex differences on key questions were analysed using the Chi-squared test. Results. Respondents were as likely to find information on the Internet as from doctors, although several reported that they had no access to these resources. Many of those surveyed used the information they found to look after themselves or someone else, to decide whether to seek assistance from a professional health care provider, and/or to make treatment decisions. Echoing results from other studies, a significant proportion of women reported that they did not discuss the information they'd found with a doctor. Conclusions. Measures included eHealth literacy, patient-centred communication (PCC), post-visit changes in worry, online health information seeking and reasons for seeking information. Analyses were based on descriptive statistics and logistic regression.\nRESULTS: Eighty per cent of patients went online post-visit. The most common source used was others' forum posts (91%). The most common reason was curiosity (68%). Dissatisfaction with the physician's performance motivated information seeking for 40% of respondents. In a multivariate analysis, post-visit online health information seeking was highest among patients who were more eHealth literate [odds ratio (OR) = 1.73 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.11, 2.71), P = 0.016], gave lower PCC ratings to their providers [OR = 0.45 (0.22, 0.90), P = 0.024] and experienced increased worry due to the visit [OR = 5.19 (1.36, 19.82), P = 0.016]. eHealth literate patients made greater use of specialized medical information (e.g. online medical journal articles) than less literate patients. Primary care physicians were rated as more patient centred than specialists. Visit-induced worry led to greater use of interpersonal channels (e.g. e-mailing other forum members). Patients who saw their doctor as less patient-centred were more likely to go online due to dissatisfaction with doctor performance.\nCONCLUSION: Online support forum members often turn to the Internet for health information following their medical visits. However, little is known about which older adults seek health information on the internet or when.\n\nOBJECTIVE\nTo determine how patient characteristics are related to seeking health information online and to the timing of these searches in relation to doctor visits.\n\nPARTICIPANTS\nSix thousand two hundred and seventy-nine respondents (aged 63 to 66 years) who completed the 2004 round of phone and mail surveys (70% response) as part of the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study Graduate Sample.\n\nMEASUREMENTS\nSelf-reported use of the internet to search for health information and timing of use.\n\nRESULTS\nOne-third of respondents had searched online for information about their own health or health care. Half of these searched for health information unrelated to their last doctor visit, while 1/3 searched after a visit, and 1/6 searched before. Among respondents with internet access at home or work, years of education (odds ratio [OR]=1.09, confidence interval [CI]=1.06 to 1.13) and openness-to-experience (OR=1.26, CI=1.16 to 1.36) were positively associated with searching online for health information irrespective of timing in relation to doctor visits. Compared with those who had never sought health information online, sicker individuals (especially those with cancer, OR=1.51, CI=1.14 to 1.99) were more likely to seek information online after a doctor visit. But how do patients perceive this behavior? This study tested the hypothesis that participants with increased knowledge about medical applications of PDAs/smartphones have more positive perceptions of physicians using them. The authors assigned 250 patients and/or family members in medical or pharmacy waiting rooms at 2 universities to either the control group or the treatment group. The treatment group viewed a brief presentation about how and why physicians use PDAs/smartphones, whereas the control group received no new information. All participants completed a survey about their knowledge (7 items) and perceptions (13 items) of physician use of PDAs/smartphones. The treatment group showed more favorable perceptions (p < .05) on 5 out of 13 survey items. In addition, in the control group, those who showed “high knowledge” had more favorable perceptions (p < .05) on 8 out of 13 survey items compared with control group participants with “low/moderate knowledge” levels. The authors concluded that even a small amount of information increases measurable perceptions.
