"abstractNote": "The world's most extensive markets for pollination services are those for honey bee pollination in the United States. These markets play important roles in coordinating the behavior of migratory beekeepers, who both produce honey and provide substitutes for ecosystem pollination services. We analyze the economic forces that drive migratory beekeeping and theoretically and empirically analyze the determinants of pollination fees in a larger and richer data set than has been studied before. Our empirical results expand our understanding of pollination markets and market‐supporting institutions that internalize external effects.",

"abstractNote": "With the increasing adoption of the ecosystem approach as integral to sustainable development policies, the economic valuation of marine and coastal ecosystem services (ESs) has become relevant for informing decision-making processes. Through an integrated approach encompassing bibliometric, network, and content analyses, this review is aimed at analyzing the evolution trend, the main research clusters, and the research gaps of the scientific literature in the field of economic valuation of marine and coastal ESs. The bibliometric results showed that the research field is experiencing an evolving positive trend and represents a challenging research topic. From the network and overlay visualization of keyword co-occurrences, it emerged that the research clusters comprehensively address the key policy-relevant issues. In the content analysis, an examination of the estimated ESs and the economic valuation methods used by studies with the highest impact on scientific research was conducted. The findings suggest that while studies provide valuable data and insights, their practical applicability in policymaking is limited, due to contextual relevance and bias issues. Overall, the review underscores the need for a paradigm shift to better inform real-world policy decisions, identifying the Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) process as a key framework for bridging these gaps in future research and policy implementation.",

"abstractNote": "As unique geographical entities, island cities boast abundant ecological resources and profound cultural values, serving as critical hubs for maintaining ecosystem services in coastal transition zones. Ensuring the stability of ecosystem services is strategically significant for sustainable urban development, while the construction of Ecosystem Service Networks (ESNs) has emerged as a core strategy to enhance ecological functionality and mitigate systemic risks. Based on current research gaps, this study focuses on three key questions: (1) How to construct a Composite Ecosystem Service Index (CESI) for island cities? (2) How to identify the Ecosystem Service Networks (ESNs) of island-type cities? (3) How to optimize the ecosystem service networks of island cities? This study selects Pingtan Island as a representative case, innovatively integrating the InVEST and MaxEnt models to conduct a comprehensive assessment of ecological and cultural services. By employing Principal Component Analysis (PCA), a Composite Ecosystem Service Index (CESI) was established. The research follows a systematic technical approach to construct and optimize the ESN: landscape connectivity indices were applied to identify ecological source areas based on CESI outcomes; multidimensional resistance factors were integrated into the Minimum Cumulative Resistance (MCR) model to develop the foundational ecological network; gradient buffer zone analysis and circuit theory were sequentially employed to refine the network structure and evaluate ecological efficacy. Key findings reveal: (1) Landscape connectivity analysis scientifically delineated 20 ecologically valuable source areas; (2) The coupled MCR model and circuit theory established a hierarchical ESN comprising 45 corridors (12 Level-1, 14 Level-2, and 19 Level-3), identifying 5.75 km2 of ecological pinch points, 7.17 km2 of ecological barriers, and 84 critical nodes—primarily concentrated in cultivated areas; (3) Buffer zone gradient analysis confirmed 30 m as the optimal corridor width for multi-scale planning; (4) Circuit theory optimization significantly enhanced network current density (1.653→8.224), demonstrating a leapfrog improvement in ecological service efficiency. The proposed “assessment–construction–optimization” integrated methodology establishes an innovative paradigm for deep integration of ecosystem services with urban spatial planning. These findings provide practical spatial guidance for island city planning, supporting corridor design, conservation prioritization, and targeted restoration, thereby enhancing ecosystem service efficiency, biodiversity protection, and resilience against coastal ecosystem fragmentation.",

"abstractNote": "The extent of our reliance on animal pollination for world crop production for human food has not previously been evaluated and the previous estimates for countries or continents have seldom used primary data. In this review, we expand the previous estimates using novel primary data from 200 countries and found that fruit, vegetable or seed production from 87 of the leading global food crops is dependent upon animal pollination, while 28 crops do not rely upon animal pollination. However, global production volumes give a contrasting perspective, since 60% of global production comes from crops that do not depend on animal pollination, 35% from crops that depend on pollinators, and 5% are unevaluated. Using all crops traded on the world market and setting aside crops that are solely passively self-pollinated, wind-pollinated or parthenocarpic, we then evaluated the level of dependence on animal-mediated pollination for crops that are directly consumed by humans. We found that pollinators are essential for 13 crops, production is highly pollinator dependent for 30, moderately for 27, slightly for 21, unimportant for 7, and is of unknown significance for the remaining 9. We further evaluated whether local and landscape-wide management for natural pollination services could help to sustain crop diversity and production. Case studies for nine crops on four continents revealed that agricultural intensification jeopardizes wild bee communities and their stabilizing effect on pollination services at the landscape scale.",

"abstractNote": "As people get richer, and ecosystem services scarcer, policy-relevant estimates of ecosystem value must rise \n , \n Governments are catching up with economic theory and practice by increasingly integrating ecosystem service values into national planning processes, including benefitcost analyses of public policies. Such analyses require information not only about today’s benefits from ecosystem services but also on how benefits change over time. We address a key limitation of existing policy guidance, which assumes that benefits from ecosystem services remain unchanged. We provide a practical rule that is grounded in economic theory and evidence-based as a guideline for how benefits change over time: They rise as societies get richer and even more so when ecosystem services are declining. Our proposal will correct a substantial downward bias in currently used estimates of future ecosystem service values. This will help governments to reflect the importance of ecosystems more accurately in benefit-cost analyses and policy decisions they inform.",

These environmental stressors have been the primary source of ecosystem degradation to date, and climate change is now exacerbating some of their effects. Ecosystems already under stress are likely to have more rapid and acute reactions to climate change; it is therefore useful to understand how multiple stresses will interact, especially as the magnitude of climate change increases. Understanding these interactions could be critically important in the design of climate adaptation strategies, especially because actions taken by other sectors (eg energy, agriculture, transportation) to address climate change may create new ecosystem stresses.",

"abstractNote": "With over 40 years of history, the multi-jurisdictional effort to restore the health of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem has yielded some positive outcomes with water quality and natural resources showing measurable signs of improvement. The lessons learned from this multi-year, multi-jurisdictional restoration effort can provide understanding and guidance for ecosystem restoration efforts elsewhere. The 10 “lessons learned” from this effort, identified by a group of scientists and policy and program leaders whose experience in the Chesapeake Bay restoration spans its entire history, are that programs and practitioners should: 1) assure the presence and maintenance of strong and effective leadership; 2) be appropriately transparent everywhere and at all times, sharing both what is known and what is not known; 3) engage everyone, welcoming and encouraging participation from all; 4) secure long-term funding and support from multiple sources; 5) empower participation by seeking, soliciting, and using active participation from all voices; 6) use science to inform and confirm; 7) employ monitoring and modeling consistently and continuously in a manner that allows for ongoing improvement and evolution; 8) communicate conditions effectively and frequently, both good news and bad news; 9) be adaptable in incorporating new information and insights while maintaining clear, strong, and measurable goals and avoiding backsliding; and 10) ensure accountability, including mandatory action when voluntary action proves insufficient.",

This article addressed the topic of public health policies from the One Health perspective, demonstrating its inclusion in various health agendas such as emerging and reemerging infectious diseases, basic sanitation, mental health, chronic non-communicable diseases, interpersonal violence, and food safety. The results showed that the application of the One Health concept to the development and implementation of policies is associated with a growing need to involve transdisciplinary teams for solving complex problems to improve communication and to ensure the relevance and acceptability of public policies, thus guaranteeing governance. According to the principle of efficiency, the government must be aware of the evolution of technical knowledge and should use the One Health approach to improve the efficacy of already existing systems. We, therefore, conducted this review to contextualize current knowledge in this topic which is becoming an essential tool for public health policy-makers and practitioners around the world promoting a reflection on the importance of multiprofessional articulation in the implementation of intersectoral public health policies.",
